The nominees of the 9th annual Groove Awards were officially announced at the Groove Nomination Night which was held on 29th April 2014 at the Arboretum grounds in Nairobi.

DK Kwenye Beat, Size 8, Bahati, Gloria Muliro and Janet Otieno were some of the leading nominees for the 2014 Groove Awards, with otehr surprise recipients such as Pitson and the return of SOC to the limelight. Some of the most hotly contested categories include ‘Male Artist of the Year’ which pits DK Kwenye Beat and Bahati against the likes of Rufftone, Jimmy Gait and newcomer Pitson. Notably absent from the role of honour was Juliani.

Elsewhere, Size 8 Reborn has been nominated for a ‘Female Artiste of the Year’ Award, alongside Eunice Njeri, Mercy D Lai, Sarah K, Janet Otieno and Gloria Muliro. It’s an interesting mix of the old and the new voices in the industry, but then again previous winner Emmy Kosgei has missed out on a nomination. Other tough groups to discern winners from include ‘Group of the Year’ and ‘New Artist/Group of the Year’.

The Groove Awards have this year for the first time ever, gone continental, seeking to recognise leading gospel artistes from Central, Southern and West Africa, in addition to East African artistes. It is for this reason that Best Artist categories in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda have been scrapped and merged into a regional block, outside of Kenya.

Widely revered as the penultimate gospel industry awards show this side of the Sahara, batteries of journalists, gospel industry celebrities, media moguls, Managing Directors and a select few of specially invited guests descended upon the grounds which are at the periphery of the expansive State House premises at the heart of the city.

Security was air-tight with checks every few meters leading into the venue that was quite a distance from the car park area. A red carpet decorated the press photography area that lead the way to a refreshments and holding area that was the designated section as the main dome was prepared for the start of the event. Scheduled to kick off at about 6pm, there were slight but calculated delays which were meant to encourage networking under twin Safaricom branded mini-domes.

As the official title sponsors of the Groove Awards, Safaricom spared no expense with special effects, lighting, sound and synchronisation. Coupled with Mo Sound entertainment and Nation Media Group’s television unit NTV, the nominations night were a fascinating glimpse into what to expect for the Awards night which is set for June 2014.

As guests settled into the dome, the national anthem was played, after which a special moment of silence observed, and a prayer given, in honour of the late Peter Kaberere who perished in a freak car wash accident earlier last month. The host of the evening was the ever charming DJ Soxxy who emphatically got onto the stage at the start of it all, resplendent in an akorino outfit and beating on a drum.

Eric Omondi, Jalang’o and DK Kwenye Beat were some of the artistes who made special appearances on the night that revealed the theme for the awards as ‘Let Your Light Shine’. Digital Director at State House Kenya, Mr. Dennis Itumbi made a surprise appearance as he represented His Excellency the President Uhuru Kenyatta, proceeding to announce that winning artistes would get significant financial boosts from the government. In addition to that, Mr Itumbi further intimated at a special forum that the President would facilitate before the end of the year, to listen to Kenyan artistes and what they have to say to improve the industry.

There was comical relief from a variety of quarters, including a Tujuane parody dubbed ‘Tuoane’ as well as funny clips from last year’s and this year’s Groove Camp held at the Enashipai Resort in Naivasha for a select group of gospel industry artistes to be mentored and gain more skills to hone in on their crafts.

NTV anchor Dann Mwangi represented the station as he announced that the company had signed a two year media sponsor contract with Groove Awards, reiterating the commitment they had to making Groove Awards bigger and better. Voting for artistes began on the night of 29th April 2014 and will run all the way up to May 31st 2014 at midnight. You can vote for your favourites at the Groove Awards website.
