Michael is forecasted to become a major hurricane by Tuesday or Tuesday night.

Scott already declared a state of emergency and has activated over 1,200 National Guard members. The hurricane is about 295 miles (475 kilometers) south of Panama City Beach, Florida. A hurricane watch is in effect from the Alabama-Florida border eastward to the Suwanee River, and tropical storm watches have been issued from the Suwanee River to Anna Maria Island and from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

President Trump, speaking at a law enforcement convention in Florida, said his administration is prepared to deal with the impacts of Hurricane Michael.

The weather system was located between Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and the west coast of Cuba by 3 p.m. and was heading slowly towards the northern Gulf Coast of Florida, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami said.
