Tropical system in Gulf of Mexico may be Hurricane by mid-week

As of the 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, our area has a 20-30 percent chance of feeling tropical-storm-force winds.

By Monday morning, almost the entire central USA will see very heavy rain and possible strong storms.

The storm center was located about 90 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, or 225 miles southwest of the western tip of Cuba.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for parts of Cuba and the east coast of Mexico, which are expected to get substantial rainfall over the next few days, the NHC reports.

Leslie has maximum sustained winds of 60 miles per hour, and while forecasters say its strength is expected to fluctuate over the next few days, it will remain a tropical storm. By Sunday afternoon, the Miami-based forecasting center said, Michael had gained more punch and the threat to the northeast U.S. Gulf Coast was rising. It is predicted to pick up some speed over the coming days. "Waves of showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage by Tuesday, with local impacts continuing through at least Thursday morning before Tropical Storm Michael accelerates northeastward towards the Carolinas on Thursday".

"Elsewhere, outer rain bands from Michael are expected to produce total rain accumulations of 2 to 4 inches across the Florida Keys through Monday", according to the NHC. "The system is east of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo off of the Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula".

According to a news release from Scott's office, the declaration will ensure governments have the "time, resources and flexibility" to prepare for the storm. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is now on the way to investigate the new tropical storm.

Storm's path has hurricane hitting the Florida Panhandle by midweek.

The path for Tropical Storm Michael shows the storm heading for the Florida panhandle and up through the southeast for the next week.

The only other storm in the Atlantic is Tropical Storm Leslie has zig-zagged in intensity.
