TOM HARDY's 'Favorite Scenes' Were Cut From VENOM

TOM HARDY's 'Favorite Scenes' Were Cut From VENOM

Do you still plan to see Venom?

Venom opens this Friday.

There's no way to sugarcoat it: Hardly anyone is impressed with Venom. What the short has to do with anything, including all that Marvel Cinematic Universe nonsense, eludes me, but it's a lot more interesting than the movie that precedes it.

Director Ruben Fleischer has an eclectic resume that includes plenty of work in sitcoms, and in theory there's nothing wrong with bringing a lighter touch to the genre.

First appearing in the comic book series as an alien costume worn by Spider-Man in Marvel's The Amazing Spider-Man #252 in 1984, it was several years before the creature left Peter Parker and merged with photographer Eddie Brock, forming the antihero known as Venom.

It feels like a movie that is largely unaware of the progress that has been made to tell stories that are both authentic to their source material and sophisticated enough for audiences unfamiliar with that material to experience them in a real way. A Venom story without Spider-Man is like a cocktail missing its primary ingredient. Armitage also found fault with the film's pacing, which he felt was slow-as-molasses to start. It's a bit like a buddy comedy minus any chemistry between leads. Eddie doesn't really come to discover any depth to Venom's hungry personality, and Venom's change of heart isn't motivated by anything demonstrably extrinsic to his relationship with Eddie, so the rapport that builds between them is framed less like a parasitic intruder and his reluctant vessel learning to get along than between an affectionately bickering couple.

Variety's Owen Gleiberman anxious in his review that Venom might end up being a "franchise kickoff that doesn't fully attain franchise liftoff", leaving Sony with a ton of work to do in crafting its planned Venom sequel. Thanks to Kasady's major homicidal streak and psychopathic tendencies, and some comic book science involving the symbiote bonding to Kasady's blood directly (don't worry about it), Carnage became a massive and powerful threat nearly immediately. "Make no mistake: The effects can be dazzling. But to what end?" In the same way that those humans' bodies so roundly reject the introduction of a gooey alien life form, Venom represents a battle between two opposing forces.

As the struggling and bumbling Brock, Hardy is given the chance to showcase his acting prowess and comedic chops.

Tom Hardy has clarified his comments regarding the number of scenes that were cut from Venom at the final edit. So the symbiote's first host is Eddie. Nasim Kuenzel of the Cameo said Hardy is expected to do a question and answer session.

The Rotten Tomatoes score also happens to be a lot lower than Sony's two previous attempts with the Amazing Spider-Man movies (72%, 52%).

Riz Ahmed plays the antagonist in the film. The fact that Venom plays everything so safe and by-the-numbers truly hinders it-a frustrating result considering that Hardy is clearly trying to put his all into the character.

But sadly, others didn't dig what Hardy did with Brock in Venom. She's underused, as are Slate and even Ahmed, who has to stand in as the actual villain of the piece.

For The Wrap's Alonso Duralde, Venom was simply too obnoxious all-over-the-place to enjoy.

Of course, not everyone felt that the film was an "armless, legless, faceless thing".

Not all critics were displeased with the film.

"Superhero fatigue got you down?"

It's hard to remember, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now Hollywood's most consistently successful franchise, is built around second-tier characters: Iron-Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk-the core heroes who comprise the Avengers-were B-list properties. A dose of Venom could be just the right antidote ...

But do the end credits of the new Venom movie actually contain a link to the iconic, web-shooting superhero?

The Snapchat lens is part of Sony's marketing push to drive fans of the Marvel character into theaters to see "Venom", which hits wide release October 5.
