Southgate excited by 'brave' Borussia Dortmund teen Sancho

Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract with England's U-19 global Jadon Sancho ahead of schedule, the "BVB" confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.

Sancho, meanwhile, becomes the first player born in the 21st century to be named in an England squad.

Gareth Southgate says the "big call" to select Borussia Dortmund teenager Jadon Sancho aligns with England's current philosophy.

Derby midfielder Mount, 19, was watched by Southgate during their Championship match against Blackburn after impressing on loan from Chelsea. There are also call-ups for Watford's Nathaniel Chalobah and Tottenham's Harry Winks.

"Very often we hold youngsters back a bit too much", said Southgate, who previously coached England's under-21 team.

Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Jesse Lingard and Adam Lallana all miss the two Nations League fixtures through injury. "Then we have a decision on which way we want to use that opportunity. They're confident players, we'd like to work with them now so that they get an understanding of how we work and we get a closer look at them".

"It is a great opportunity for us to look at them".

He joined the German side from Manchester City for about £10m in August 2017 and signed a new deal earlier this week. Jadon has done really well, he has come in and created goals and scored, and Mason has been outstanding at Derby.

Jadon's is an unusual story.

The winger's promotion to the senior setup comes after a sparkling beginning to the new season for Dortmund that has included two Champions League starts.

"I think this aligns with what we've done in the last 18 months, really", said Southgate, who helped bring about the end of Wayne Rooney's worldwide career a year ago.

Mason's situation is slightly different. He had a year at [Dutch side] Vitesse Arnhem last year so he's had another year of men's football.

"[Sancho and Mount] are both in their formative stages but we think they can play in the group".

A total of three Liverpool players have been picked - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson - while Tottenham have a total of five players in the squad; Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Harry Kane. Alex McCarthy (3 December 1989) is the oldest player at 28. The squad has a total of 51 global goals.
