Putin calls ex-spy Skripal a 'scumbag' and 'traitor'

Putin calls ex-spy Skripal a 'scumbag' and 'traitor'

The last India-Russia bilateral summit was held in Russia on June 1, 2017.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday branded former double agent Sergei Skripal a "traitor" and a "scumbag", saying Moscow knew he had cooperated with foreign intelligence after his release in a spy swap.

India says it needs the missile system that provides high altitude protection from incoming missiles to bolster its defenses against China and Pakistan.

According to the Ushakov, 'The key feature of the Russian president's visit to India will be the signing of the agreement to deliver S-400 air defence systems.

By approving the contract, the Indian government has defied the US Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, also known as CAATSA on Russian Federation.

The United Nations' top court ruled Wednesday that the USA should lift some of its sanctions on Iran, warning that they could interfere with food, medical supplies and other humanitarian aid going to the country. Prime Minister and Narendra Modi will meet Russian President for bilateral talks on 5th October. So the Russian S-400s are being seen as a good solution.

The reports suggest both the countries will also be signing space sector deal and energy deals. Moscow is now expanding India's biggest nuclear power plant in Kudankulam. Sources in New Delhi told The Indian Express these will cover areas such as nuclear, space, economic issues, among others. It comes a month after the inaugural 2+2 dialogue with the U.S., in which India signed the third foundational agreement - Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) - in addition to announcing several measures to operationalise the Major Defence Partner status, indicative of the hard balance India hopes to maintain amidst deepening U.S. -Russia tensions.

But military relations would likely be the main focus.

Russian Federation and India have had warm ties since Stalin died in 1953.

Last month, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow and Beijing were working together with the European Union to counter United States sanctions. Putin's image as an avid sportsman is also on display throughout the year, with photos of him wielding a shooting range pistol, playing hockey, horseback riding and cycling along a wooded road.
