First lady Melania Trump on Wednesday visited a facility in Ghana where slaves were held before being sent overseas and said she will "never forget" it.

The 17th-century facility in the seaside town of Cape Coast was built by the Swedes to trade in timber and gold but became a place where slaves were held until they could be shipped out through a "Door of No Return".

She calls Wednesday's visit to Cape Coast Castle "very emotional" and "really something that people should see and experience". The palace is also home to "Obama Hall", dubbed such after a visit from then-President Barack Obama in 2009. Obama said it was a reminder of "the capacity of human beings to commit great evil". She spent about 10 minutes inside the dark, cramped dungeon where male slaves were housed.

"There are a lot of people (in Ghana) who are extremely indifferent about this visit", political commentator Etse Sikanku told AFP.

Before proceeding to the slave castle, she visited the palace of the head chief of the area and obtained royal approval to visit the fortress after USA officials presented a gift of drinks to the chiefs.

A reporter at the airport said the former model was smiling and looked relaxed as she was entertained by a troupe of traditional drummers and dancers.

In June, she made a surprise visit to Texas to visit detained children at the Mexican border, wearing a jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care".

When announcing the tour, Trump said she will visit four handsome and different African countries.

The week-long tour is the longest solo global trip she has made without the United States president.

Trump also walked through the fabled "Door of No Return", an archway over a small tunnel that led from the main square of the interior castle down to the beach, where large waves crashed upon the shore.

The First Lady's visit comes months after United States president Donald Trump was accused of racism when he called some countries shithole countries.

First lady Melania Trump's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, and her chief of staff, Lindsay Reynolds, are traveling with her.

Hey! Quick question. Remember that olive green parka that Melania Trump wore while visiting the detention camps in Texas where hundreds of immigrant children who had been separated from their parents at the border were being held? She has stops planned in Malawi, Kenya and Egypt.

Trump also met with Ghana's first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, at the presidential palace Tuesday.
