McConnell: Kavanaugh deserved an up-or-down vote

Donald Trump has said sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh, his nominee for the US Supreme Court, were a "hoax" and "all made up".

Avenatti is carrying on his own dalliance - with the prospect of running for president in 2020 - but some Republicans believe his attachment to the most implausible allegations against Kavanaugh tainted the more credible ones.

An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll released Wednesday indicated that the battle over Kavanaugh's nomination had helped Republicans close the enthusiasm gap with Democrats, who are energized by Trump's surprise win in 2016. "These are highly principled people", Verrilli says, "and Roe is incompatible with their most deeply held views about how you ought to understand and interpret the Constitution".

Mr Kavanaugh was accused by several women of sexual misconduct, including California professor Christine Blasey Ford who testified under oath that the judge tried to assault her at a high school party decades ago.

This weekend's cold open sketch on Saturday Night Live showed the Senate Republicans' reaction to Brett Kavanaugh SCOTUS confirmation as a rowdy, celebratory post-game locker room scenario.

The latest justice to join the bench, Neil Gorsuch, spoke previous year during his swearing-in at the White House Rose Garden.

Paula Reid, CBS News correspondent covering the Justice Department, the White House and legal affairs. However, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan did not offer remarks during their respective swearing-in ceremonies, opting, instead, to speak at receptions with then-President Barack Obama regarding their appointments. Besides, the court fight was firing up Republican voters ahead of the midterm elections in ways the GOP leader said he couldn't have imagined.

The accusations transformed the clash from a routine struggle over judicial ideology into an angry jumble of questions about victims' rights and personal attacks on nominees.

"With Anita Hill, there was a full FBI investigation before there was ever a hearing", Lisa Banks, another of Ford's attorneys, told NBC, referring to the woman who accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment after he was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1991. Wavering voters often move back toward their party's candidates as Election Day nears, and most of the competitive Senate races are in states that voted for Trump by a significant margin. McConnell called the current partisan divide a "low point", but he blamed Democrats.

"In the White House, aides gathered in Vice President Mike Pence's office in the Senate Dirksen Building were 'demoralized, ' officials said". Yet Kavanaugh is joining under a cloud. Outside groups are culling an unusually long paper trail from his previous government and political work, with the National Archives and Records Administration expected to release a cache of millions of documents later this month.

Republicans now hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with several seats up for grabs in November.

McConnell appeared on "Fox News Sunday" and CBS' "Face the Nation".

Now, Halsted said, Collins' constituents are "ready to support a senator from Maine who is going to stand up for Mainers and do what's right for the country, regardless of political party-and I think people realize Susan Collins is not that senator".
