Kenyans have great confidence in Donald Trump, survey shows

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a Medal of Honor ceremony for former U.S. Army medic Ronald J. Shurer awarded "for conspicuous gallantry" for actions he took while serving in 2008 in Afghanistan at the White House in Washington, U.S., October 1, 2018.

Canada's opinion of the United States has tumbled to a "low point", a new survey suggests, with confidence in U.S. President Donald Trump markedly lower than for his predecessor.

Since taking office in January 2017, Mr Trump has pulled the United States out of global agreements like the Paris climate accord and Iran nuclear deal, cozied up to authoritarian leaders like Mr Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, and criticised his neighbours and Nato allies.

"In June, after a Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada, Trump refused to sign a joint statement and called the host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, very dishonest and weak".

The trends in Canada - a two-year erosion of USA favourability and presidential ratings - were pervasive among America's allies and neighbours, the survey suggests.

Just 30 per cent of Germans have a favourable view of the United States, down five points from past year and the lowest score in the entire survey after Russian Federation, on 26 per cent.

The survey of America's global image among 25 nations, including all of the United States leading European allies, shows Trump's worldwide approval rating plummeting amid widespread opposition to his administration's policies and lack of confidence in his leadership.

For Mexico, a neighbour Trump wants to isolate with his plans to build a wall, this figure halved from 66% to 32%.

Thirty-eight percent of French and 39 percent of Canadians said they had a positive view of the United States, both down from previous year.

Meanwhile, a plurality of Russians said they preferred Chinese leadership to USA leadership, at 35 and 13 percent respectively. And Trump got the lowest confidence rating In Mexico, where just 6 percent of respondents expressed faith in his leadership.

In Australia - where 52 percent say China is the current leading economic power - almost three-quarters still say they prefer a future where the U.S.is the world's dominant power.

Only 27 percent of those surveyed in 25 nations worldwide had confidence in Trump to do the right thing regarding world affairs, while 70 percent had no confidence in him. That compared unfavorably to Putin, on 30 percent, and Xi, on 34 percent.

Scores for the three men were far outstripped by those of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who ranked first in the poll, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Views of both the US and its president fell in Russian Federation, where Trump's approval plunged to 19 per cent from 53 per cent amid disputes over Syria, economic sanctions and allegations of election-meddling.
