Jose Mourinho demands Man United's public support before Newcastle match

Nothing sums up the petty nature of the battle between José Mourinho and the Manchester United board than his first two substitutions in today's match against Newcastle United. Undoubtedly, that is a trend that needs to stop.

A run of four games in all competitions without a victory put pressure on Mourinho, who came under increased scrutiny before the game with the Daily Mirror reporting that he would be sacked regardless of the result on Saturday.

But they rallied to score three goals inside the final 20 minutes, with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial netting before Alexis Sanchez headed in a 90th-minute victor.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Mourinho has been pushing for a show of support from Woodward and the Glazer family, United's owners, in recent weeks, with further efforts made this week to prompt them into a public statement of their backing.

"What did we want?"

An animated Mourinho reacted with fury, screaming at his players and gesticulating wildly. It is the first time I see man-hunting.

United travel to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea on October 20, while Juventus visit Old Trafford on October 23.

"You can say it's unprofessional but I have to speak as a fan and what I feel, and at the end of the day I'm on Sky Sports, I'm here as someone who offers a level of neutrality".

Asked who was to blame for United's predicament, Mourinho responded: "The same people that were to blame for the fantastic season of last season".

Suddenly at 3-2 and with the fourth official confirming five minutes of added time, the jubilant United fans sang Mourinho's name for the first time all day.

Christian Atsu hopes Newcastle United pile compound the misery of fellow strugglers Manchester United ahead of the meeting of the two sides on Saturday.

"No, I think we have enough potential to do better than what we are doing in the Premier League", Mourinho said.

'He was playing with Matic in front of [Chris] Smalling because we need some technical quality to bring the ball from the back and the way to have some technical quality to bring the ball from the back was to play Paul and Matic there'. "It is the life I love and since I was a kid I work for this".

It is believed that Michael Carrick will take charge of the squad in a temporary role if Mourinho is indeed let go, something which will result in the Portuguese coach raking in around £20m in compensation.
