Fund set up for 11-year-old killed in Hurricane Michael

A neighbor told McCall that all the docks in the area were destroyed and many people are stuck in their homes as the roads have been blocked with debris.

A hurricane is a danger due to heavy rains and floods. "So many lives have been changed forever".

"Oh my God, what are we seeing?" said evacuee Rachel Franklin, her mouth hanging open.

But the full extent of the damage was not yet clear, with some of the hardest-hit areas difficult to reach. An 130km stretch of Interstate 10, the main east-west route along the Panhandle, was closed.

It gathered still more strength just before making landfall north-west of the town of Mexico Beach yesterday afternoon as a category four hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

Entire blocks of homes near the beach were obliterated, reduced to nothing but concrete slabs in the sand. Some operate vacation home rentals, while others work jobs cleaning and maintaining the homes. In Panama City Beach, winds reached a speed of 100 miles per hour and tore houses apart due to storm surges.

As many as 320,000 people on Florida's Gulf Coast had disregarded evacuation notices, according to Brad Kieserman of the American Red Cross. But it moved so fast and intensified so quickly that people didn't have much time to prepare, and emergency authorities lamented that many ignored the warnings.

National Guard troops made their way into the ground-zero town and found 20 survivors Wednesday night, and more rescue crews arrived Thursday.

Most of the full-time residents, LaFountain said, have some connection to the hospitality industry.

Mishelle McPherson and her ex-husband looked for the elderly mother of a friend on Thursday.

"Do you think her body would be here?" Michael's storm surge pushed lead-gray water up to the rooftops. "All of my furniture was floating", she said. "It was very bad, and now there's just nothing left".

Downed power lines lay almost everywhere. "I would do anything to just know he's OK", she said. "You want to check on things, and begin the recovery process", Scott said. "As we saw with Hurricanes H-I-M [Harvey, Irma, Maria] in 2017, $100 billion in insured losses did not really rock the market long term".

"There are so many downed power lines and trees that it's nearly impossible to get through the city", Apalachicola Mayor Van Johnson said. Sgt. Angela Hightower did not identify the man but said he had been found at the home in Greensboro around 6 p.m.

When they pulled up, ripped shingles, mangled cars and twisted street signs were scattered everywhere. Roofs had been peeled off. Aluminum siding was shredded to ribbons. We thought the windows were going to break at any time. A pine tree punched a hole in their roof and his ears even popped when the barometric pressure went lower. The damage at Bay Medical Sacred Heart included blown-out windows and a cracked exterior wall though no patients were hurt. The facility houses the largest psychiatric hospital in Florida, caring for almost 40 percent of all state mental health patients, according to the Miami Herald. All phone communicaiton was cut off to the complex of almost 1,000 residents and more than 300 staff, leaving emergency radios as their only link out.

By all accounts, Sarah Radney was safe inside her grandparents' home when Hurricane Michael roared into southwest Georgia. A driver in North Carolina was killed when a tree fell on his vehicle.

Damage in Panama City, just west of where Michael came ashore Wednesday afternoon, was so extensive that broken and uprooted trees and downed power lines lay almost everywhere. Forecasters said it could drop up to 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain over the Carolinas and Virginia before pushing out to sea in coming hours. A falling tree also killed one man in Iredell County, North Carolina. Michael's winds also toppled trees and power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands without power and flash flooding also was reported in North Carolina's two largest cities, Charlotte and Raleigh.

Michael was later downgraded to Category 3 after 5 pm (local time) on Wednesday, which still means that it is still a major storm with wind speeds packing up to 129 miles per hour.
