Democrats renew questions over Brett Kavanaugh's honesty and temperament

Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said that she will continue to support Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court should the Federal Bureau of Investigation not find additional evidence or corroboration of accuser Christine Blasey Ford's allegations of sexual assault.

Late last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee heard from both Kavanaugh, and Christine Blasey Ford, who says Kavanaugh drunkenly pinned her down on a bed and groped her against her will at a high school gathering in 1982.

"It's a tough thing going on", Trump said.

Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the allegations, as has Judge.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats on Tuesday of opening "the flood gates of mud and muck" against Brett Kavanaugh as Republicans sought to portray efforts to derail the Supreme Court nominee over accusations of sexual assault in the 1980s as "the politics of personal destruction".

President Trump on Tuesday lamented what his Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh is experiencing, saying it reflects a "very scary time" in the country when young men can be falsely accused of bad behavior. They forced the White House to open a supplemental background investigation of sexual misconduct allegations against the judge.

■ But The Washington Post, citing two people familiar with the matter, took a more cautious tone, reporting that the White House had given the FBI permission to expand the investigation "at least slightly".

Deborah Ramirez, who said Mr Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party, is also understood to have now been interviewed.

GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Jeff Flake are the other key senators.

A member of the Judiciary Committee, Mr Flake voted to approve Mr Kavanaugh in the panel's vote on Friday that sent the nomination to the full Senate for consideration, but only after he requested that the FBI conduct an investigation of the sexual misconduct allegations against the nominee. Kavanaugh, whose Senate confirmation has been thrown into doubt by the accusations, has denied the claims by all three women.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said that when Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he abandoned any pretense of being an impartial jurist and revealed that he bears "bitter partisan resentments".

If Kavanaugh's accusers fail to provide "any evidence to corroborate the [sexual assault] claims and Kavanaugh says these incidents did not happen", Americans believe Kavanaugh should sit on the Supreme Court, by a margin of 57% to 43%.

Democrats, McConnell said, "will not be satisfied unless they have brought down Judge Kavanaugh's nomination".

He said it's important that senators had a chance to ask directly about what the FBI investigated, what evidence they collected and who they interviewed.

Julia Swetnick says she went to house parties attended by Mr Kavanaugh in the early 1980s, where she said he and his friends tried to "spike" girls' drinks.

"Kavanugh's testimony rubbed a lot of people the wrong way", Kimmel said, dragging in his most famous celebrity feud.

A vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh has been delayed as the FBI investigates the claims, which he denies. "They're not angels", he said.

"If Kavanaugh lied, it's awful...unacceptable", Donald Trump said - and that's a long way from his unequivocal support for the nominee a few weeks ago. If Judge Kavanaugh's opponents want to claim he lied about his drinking when he was younger, perhaps they should stop lying about what he actually said.

"It does us no good to have an investigation that just gives us more cover", Flake said.

Schumer said Kavanaugh was "rudely interrupting" senators in a way he'd never seen from a witness.
