China Says US Actions Hurting Relationship

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at a Monday meeting in Beijing that "a shadow has been cast over the future of China-US relations".

But the senior US official said the United States still expected cooperation with Beijing on efforts to denuclearize North Korea, whose chief ally is China.

Kim Jong Un has agreed to hold a second summit with US President Donald Trump as soon as possible, Seoul said Sunday, after Washington's top diplomat held "productive" talks on denuclearisation with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang.

"We had a good, productive conversation", Pompeo said about the almost two-hour-long talks.

President Trump and Chairman Kim held an historic summit on June 12.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke of fundamental differences.

"We require that the United States stop such misguided actions", he said, adding that the two countries should pursue cooperation "and not descend into conflict and confrontation".

Pompeo's bodyguard was also ordered to leave his weapon behind during the negotiations.

Pompeo and Kim made "significant progress" in "a long process" to denuclearize North Korea and "will continue to make significant progress and we are further along in making that progress than any administration in an awfully long time", he said.

During the historic Singapore summit with USA president Donald Trump, it was hard to spot Kim behind the wall of the men in black. "We believe that we need to keep our relationship on the right track", Wang told Pompeo at the start of a meeting.

Washington and Pyongyang have sparred over the exact terms of the vaguely-worded agreement in Singapore, with the United States pushing to maintain sanctions and pressure against the North until its "final, fully verified denuclearisation". Pompeo was hit by North Korean officials a few months ago as having a "gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

Since Trump and Kim met in Singapore in June, US-North Korea relations have stalled.

The country's state newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, featured eight photos of the meeting on its front page, including various shots of Kim and Pompeo smiling and shaking hands - and some with Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong in attendance.

During Pompeo's meeting in Pyongyang, Kim also invited inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site to "confirm that it has been irreversibly dismantled", the State Department said.

"For Asia, the severity of China-U.S. frictions is taking up much attention and is, to some extent, diluting attention paid to the Korean peninsula issue", it said.

A key issue highlighted by one former US official who has spoken to North Korean officials in recent months is that the definition Kim's regime has of denuclearization is far more expansive than it is for the U.S.

"I know that during your visit, you also want to exchange views with the Chinese side on regional hotspot issues including the situation in the Korean Peninsula", Wang said.
