Aguero nominated for Ballon d'Or

Five-time victor Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Antoine Griezmann lead the shortlist for football's most prestigious individual prize, while Kylian Mbappe is the standout in the race for the new Kopa Trophy for young players.

The Juventus forward, now facing allegations of rape dating back to 2009 that he strenuously denies, has already won the Ballon d'Or five times and is the current holder of the award. Real Madrid's Luke Modric is in the running to be named the Ballon d'Or victor for 2018 after winning the FIFA Best award.

Real Madrid playmaker Isco and Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante have also been revealed as nominees for France Football's prize.

Eden Hazard gives Chelsea another player in the running after starring alongside De Bruyne at the World Cup, with England's Golden Boot victor Harry Kane also included.

De Bruyne was nominated for helping City win the Premier League and Belgium reach the World Cup semi-finals.

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne are contenders while Liverpool's formidable top three Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were all included.

The Ballon d'Or is considered the most coveted personal accolade a player can achieve and this year's awards ceremony will take place in Paris on December 3.

In another first, the best under-21 player will receive the Kopa Trophy.

A total of 30 players will make up the shortlist for the award, which was won by Cristiano Ronaldo in 2017.

Kylian Mbappe is third-favourite after winning the World Cup with France at the age of 19, with 6-1 odds.
