What to expect at N.Korea 70th anniversary gala

North Korea showcased its latest weaponry and best goose-stepping soldiers Sunday as the reclusive nation marked its 70 anniversary with a military parade at a time when it is under worldwide pressure to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.

The event is the second major show of military might this year following a similar procession in February, though unlike previously, Sunday's parade did not feature intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) believed to be capable of targeting the US.

With no long-range missiles on display, North Korea has staged a military parade focused on peace and economic development, filled with coloured balloons and flowers to mark the 70th anniversary of the country's founding.

All eyes are on whether Kim will make a public speech at the parade, and if so, what kind of message he will send as denuclearization talks have reached an impasse after the first-ever U.S.

At the end of the parade, Kim and Li Zhanshu, the third-highest ranking official in the ruling Communist Party of China, raised hands together and waved to the audience from the balcony. The military portion featured thousands of soldiers wearing uniforms from different periods of North Korea's history, dating back from 1948 through to the present day.

Kim, clad in a black Mao-style suit, reviewed the military parade from a balcony overlooking Kim Il-sung Square, the central Pyongyang area named after his grandfather and North Korea's founder.

Kim's tone has changed, however, following a meeting with Donald Trump in the summer, where he committed to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. This was said by the speaker of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matviyenko on the outcomes of negotiations with the North Korean chief, studies RIA "Novosti".

North Korea said the request to circulate the document to the 193 United Nations member states "shows full determination of North and South Korea to keep advancing the North-South ties without deviation" and to demonstrate that they "have entered definitely the new orbit of peace, the orbit of reconciliation and cooperation".

"For the United States essentially the only issue, why they worry about North Korea, is nuclear weapons, and they are willing to stop at pretty much nothing to have the nuclear issue solved", he said. It will be the first time that a Chinese leader participates in the annual economic forum hosted by Russian Federation.

The direct communication comes after the North Korean leader told a South Korean official that he has "unwavering trust for President Trump" and wants to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula before Trump finishes his term.

Two generations of the Kim dynasty and a dozen US administrations later, North Korea has developed nuclear weapons and missiles capable of delivering them across the globe, arguing this to be a necessary defense against Washington's hostility.

The North Korean leader also said he would take "more active" measures toward denuclearization if his moves are met with corresponding goodwill measures, Chung said.

He called on the military to be ready to work to help build the economy.

No ICMBs were showcased in Pyongyang as the country celebrated its 70th anniversary on Sunday.

That includes iconic mass games that Pyongyang is organizing for the first time in five years, a huge, nationalist pageant performed by up to 100,000 people in one of the world's largest stadiums.

To prevent such a confrontation, Moon is creating "a wave of insincere, dishonest, shallow optimism", Lankov said.
