Trump Renews Attack on Critical Book

Trump Renews Attack on Critical Book

"Fear: Trump in the White House" caused an uproar last week after Woodward released excerpts from the book, depicting the president as angry, frustrated and paranoid about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

Trump's economic adviser Gary Cohn removed papers from the president's desk to stop him from withdrawing from KORUS, according to Woodward's reporting.

The White House on Monday called Woodward's work "reckless" and did not rule out the possibility of a lawsuit.

Trump and the White House, along with numerous senior officials including Defense Secretary James Mattis and chief of staff John Kelly, strongly disputed the book's content. "That's just the Washington denial machine", he said Monday, a familiar formula created to protect their jobs and preserve their relations with their boss.

Mattis issued a statement, tweeted at least twice by Trump, saying, "The contemptuous words about the President attributed to me in Woodward's book were never uttered by me or in my presence".

Among other things Colbert and Woodward discussed was if the author ever thinks about the motives of his sources. "I mean, over the years, I wasn't going to people's homes without an appointment", knocking on the door and asking them to talk. And given how norm-busting Trump's presidency is - in terms of his relationships to the media, to his own party, to policy - it's also hard to avoid making mountains out of everything, even those things that might be molehills. The only book that directly deals with Trump that outranks Fear is Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury, something that Woodward's book would struggle to overcome, but the book is sure to keep selling and see even more printings.

Minutes after Cohn's rebuttal, former White House staff secretary Rob Porter issued a similarly vague statement painting "Fear" as "misleading".

Don Jr. offered his own theory on who was behind last week's opinion piece, which claimed White House staff are deliberately frustrating numerous president's orders.

Cohn said on Tuesday that portrayals of him in Woodward's book are inaccurate. "I just want to find out what happened", he said. Dems can't stand losing. If I did, I would not have been elected president. But I really appreciate their statement.

Asked whether he thinks any laws were broken, Trump Jr. said: "Listen, I think you're subverting the will of the people". Trump's response, per Woodward: "What are you talking about?"

"I'm not, because I know what I did, and I'm not anxious about it", Trump Jr. said.

During the first meeting between President-elect Donald Trump and his top economic adviser, Trump appeared confused by elements of the federal debt and United States monetary policy.
