Tropical Storm Gordon makes landfall near Alabama-Mississippi border

Tropical storm Gordon made landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) says.

The storm's turbulent center is expected to plow a path from the southwest corner of Alabama and central MS into part of Louisiana and southern Arkansas.

The storm made landfall just west of the Alabama-Mississippi border around 10 p.m., but the winds and rain did not spare the Panhandle. The Escambia County Sheriff's office posted on its Facebook page that responding deputies discovered that the child had been killed. The name and age of the child were not released.

The mid-week report from Florida Fish and Wildlife shows that background concentrations of the organism that causes red tide are lower in many areas, but that can't for sure be attributed to the storm's path.

Water levels from storm surge along the Gulf of Mexico will gradually subside Wednesday morning, the NHC said.

"We don't want to go through what we went through before", O'Neal says.

Thousands are without power along the Gulf Coast late Tuesday as the region braces for a possible hurricane that is due to make landfall sometime in the evening.

"We are still seeing abnormal to exceptional drought (conditions)", Drake said.

The storm is expected to become a hurricane, with winds of at least 74mph (119km/h) and up to 12 inches (30cm) of rain forecast by the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Grand Isle Mayor David Campardelle called for a voluntary evacuation of the barrier island.

Still, tropical storm, storm-surge and flash-flood warnings are in effect through early Wednesday night for the Crescent City with "potential threat to life and property", the National Weather Service said today.

Skies quickly turned dark gray as storms overshadowed Mobile, a port city.

Nevertheless, she said she and her husband will remain in their home, which sits on tall pilings, 24 feet above the ground.

Schools have been closed along the coast and governors in MS and Louisiana have already declared a state of emergency as the storm advances.

People in the Gulf Coast are dealing with heavy flooding from Tropical Storm Gordon.

The storm left many businesses on Florida's Gulf Coast feeling shortchanged by the holiday weekend. New Orleans braced for flooding, but in the end got only a glancing blow.
