Tropical Storm Gordon brings hurricane watch to US Gulf Coast

Gordon was generating winds of 105km/h on Tuesday as it steamed west-northwest at 27km/h, the National Hurricane Centre said.

The first is its speed - Gordon is moving relatively fast at 17 miles per hour and is losing how much warm Gulf water is has to grow stronger. The lowest central pressured was measured at 1003 millibars.

Gordon is hitting the Gulf Coast, striking the MS and Alabama border directly at close to hurricane strength.

Gordon was located about 450km east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River and was packing maximum sustained winds of 100km/h, the Miami-based weather forecaster said. The barometric pressure in Gordon had dropped another millibar to 1006.

Starting from the Florida-Alabama border to the Mississippi's Pearl River, the tropical storm is likely to hit those areas and the warning has been issued accordingly. "Evacuate immediately away from coastal storm surges if instructed by local officials".

Escambia county received 10 calls overnight for downed trees in roadways, along with multiple reports of arcing power lines as the storm blew through with peak gusts of 61 miles per hour (98 kph).

Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds Monday.

Tropical Storm Gordon is the Atlantic basin's seventh named storm of the year.

Pressure was 1007 mb, down two millibars from the previous measurement. It predicts rising waters of 3 to 5 feet in an area stretching from Shell Beach, Louisiana to Dauphin Island, Alabama.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency told South Mississippi residents to be prepared to evacuate. The rain will be picking up in intensity near Naples and Fort Myers Monday evening as the center of Gordon continues moving toward southwest Florida. According to an NHC chart, the Emerald Coast should be feeling the effects from Gordon starting Tuesday morning. By Wednesday afternoon the numbers were down to about 5,800 in Alabama, 3,000 in MS and a little more than 2,000 in Florida. Farther west, tides will be 2-4 feet above normal. Localized totals of 6 inches or more are possible in some areas. Tornadoes are also possible through Wednesday night over MS and western Alabama, it added. It urged residents to complete preparations for the storm today.

"We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide additional information to the Loyola community as warranted throughout the day tomorrow." said Warren in the email.
