There are now three huge storms developing in the Atlantic

Helene is projected to continue northwestward tonight with a turn toward the north-northwest on Wednesday before turning northeastward with increasing forward speed, the NHC said.

Since reliable record-keeping began more than 150 years ago, North Carolina has only been hit by one Category 4 hurricane: Hazel, with 130 miles per hour winds in 1954.

Helene: The 5:00am advisory on Hurricane Helene has the storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour.

And Hurricane Florence will take aim at the Southeast coast of the United States late this week, likely as a major hurricane.

"On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday", the NHC said.

The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes past year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed about 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed 68 and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage from catastrophic flooding in Houston.

Motorists streamed inland on highways converted to one-way evacuation routes Tuesday as about 1.7 million people in three states were warned to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence.

This storm is lined up behind Florence in the Atlantic.

At 11 a.m., Tropical Storm Isaac, carrying maximum sustained winds near 70 miles per hour, was located about 775 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and was moving towards the west at 16 miles per hour.

"Additional strengthening was expected over the next day or two".

The center of the massive storm is then forecast to meander Thursday, Friday and Saturday over a stretch of coastline saturated by rising seas, inundating several states and triggering life-threatening floods. "It's going to destroy homes", said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The tropical Atlantic and tropical Pacific will be very busy this week, with preparations underway as Hurricane Florence threatens the Carolinas later this week, while Tropical Storm Issac threatens the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean later this week.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference his state was in "the bull's eye".

Gradual weakening was expected Tuesday night and last until Helene returns to tropical storm status Thursday, forecasters said.

As of 11 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,085 miles east-southeast of Bald Head Island. It took Matheson and her husband almost the whole day Monday to drive the 60 miles off the barrier island.

Hurricane Helene is in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean and not expected to be near any land.

Winds of tropical storm force could reach Puerto Rico Thursday evening.

The U.S. Navy is also taking precautions, with the U.S. Fleet Forces Command ordering almost 30 ships in the Hampton Roads area of the Virginia coast to head out to sea to avoid the storm.

However, as the wave drifts into the Gulf of Mexico, the atmosphere will develop into more favorable for development to create a named system, Paul said.

Two other storms were spinning in the Atlantic as the 2018 hurricane season reaches its peak.
