Kei Nishikori gains revenge, beats Marin Cilic to reach US Open semifinals

The Japanese star, who lost to Cilic in his only grand slam final appearance to date four years ago, gained some semblance of revenge as he triumphed 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted four hours and eight minutes.

Only once in the professional era that began in 1968 had Japan had a men's and women's player in the quarter-finals at the same tournament.

Osaka wasn't born when compatriot Kimiko Date made the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1996 but now the 20-year-old has the opportunity to go one better by reaching a maiden Grand Slam final.

But Cilic, US Open champion in 2014 refused to back down and took the match into a decider by winning the fourth set 6-4.

The momentum continued to swing dramatically, with Nishikori breaking before being pegged back by Cilic once more.

Cilic, who won their final meeting in straight sets, was pushed to the limit this time around with Nishikori extending his dominance to nine wins from 15 meetings.

Kei Nishikori defeated the German Philipp Kohlschreiber to reach the US Open quarter-finals.

'It was really tough, ' Nishikori said in his on-court interview.

Tsurenko, the only unseeded woman to reach this stage of the tournament, will be playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final when she kicks off Wednesday's action on what is expected to be another steamy day in NY. ". It definitely means a lot, and I always thought if I were to win a Grand Slam, the first one I'd want to win is the U.S. Open because I've grown up here, and then my grandparents can come and watch". "I think it would be really cool". Tsurenko had 31 unforced errors to Osaka's 11, and Osaka finished with 12 winners.

"The quarters was sort of my mental goal, every time I played a Grand Slam", said Osaka.

Osaka had reached the Australian Open last-16 in January in her previous best run at the majors.

She won 59 points to just 28 for the unseeded Ukrainian, who knocked off No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.

"Unfortunately during this tournament I had many issues with my health, and today was not my day obviously". She is now based in Florida, trains with Bajin at Evert's academy in Boca Raton, and made the decision to play for Japan largely because of financial reasons - the Japanese federation offered more support money than the U.S. Tennis Association.

Osaka had consecutive 50-minute matches earlier in the tournament, including a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the third round.

Osaka was an easy victor in her quarterfinal, eliminating unseeded Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-1, 6-1 in all of 57 minutes.
