Jalaluddin Haqqani, founder of Haqqani terrorist network, dies from illness: Afghan Taliban

It is also widely believed to have been behind numerous recent attacks in the capital Kabul that were claimed by the local wing of Islamic State.

Michael Kugelman, an expert on Afghanistan at the US -based Wilson Center, also said that Haqqani's departure will not impact the current political or military situation in Afghanistan.

Haqqani hadn't been heard from in years, and in 2015 reports of his death were widespread.

He was believed to be in eighties and several times in the past the news of his death was circulated but it was not confirmed by the militant group.

The Haqqani Network, founded in 1970s, fought the former Soviet Union throughout the 1980s. Haqqani network too has been responsible for some of the deadliest attacks that hit Kabul in the past.

Zabihullah Mujahed, a Taliban spokesman, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview Tuesday that Haqqani died on Monday inside Afghanistan.

Haqqani spent almost the whole of the second half of his life as a rebel leader, first as a major figure in fighting the Soviet occupation, during which he was heavily funded by the United States government, then subsequently against the U.S. during their own occupation of Afghanistan.

He gained notoriety for his organisation and bravery, garnering attention from the Central Intelligence Agency and a personal visit from U.S. congressman Charlie Wilson.

Declassified U.S. cables called Haqqani a "moderate socialist" who did not embrace the Taliban's strict rules that denied girls education. In October 2001, Haqqani used to be named the Taliban's protection force commander.

The elder Haqqani was paralyzed for the past 10 years, AP reported.

The group is the bone of contention between Pakistan and the U.S. as the latter accuse that Haqqani militants were still using Pakistani soil to launch attacks - a charge denied by Pakistan.

That included the Haqqanis, who coordinated attacks on NATO from across the border in their stronghold of Miranshah, the biggest town in North Waziristan, one of Pakistan's loosely governed tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

Some militant sources say the pressure forced numerous Haqqanis underground or over the border into their Afghan strongholds, claims that AFP could not confirm. After the communist government in Kabul was overthrown by the USA -backed "mujahideen", Haqqani served as justice minister in "mujahideen government", albeit briefly. Many of the Arab fighters gravitated toward Haqqani because he was an Arabic speaker and a ferocious warrior.

In 1980s, he allied with the US forces to fight the communist government in Kabul backed by Russian Federation, and that shot him to prominence in militant circles. Haqqani also had close ties with Al Qaeda. He served in the Taliban government after it took power in 1996 following years of civil war. Whereas some say it used to be intended primarily to crimson meat up USA kin with Pakistan, others say that it used to be to form the Soviets anguish. Bin Laden was among the first to sign up. Several Pakistani militants affiliated with Harakat-ul-Mujahedeen group were killed in that attack.
