'Incredibly Distasteful': 'Outnumbered' on Trump Casting Doubt on Hurricane Maria Death Toll

The loss of any life is tragic; the extent of lives lost as a result of Maria is heart wrenching. "I'll continue to help PR".

The Republican and Democratic gubernatorial candidates, in differing tones, also separated themselves from Trump's statement.

State Sen. Victor Torres, an Orlando Democrat who is Puerto Rican, called Trump's tweets "painful and horrifying and completely unfounded", while also labeling Scott and DeSantis the president's "closest allies" in Florida.

Throughout his presidency, Trump has struggled to publicly express empathy at times of national crises, sparking outrage during his post-Maria visit when he feuded with the San Juan mayor and tossed out paper towels to victims like he was shooting baskets.

In the months leading up to Maria's approach, FEMA had 10,683 people on hand, about 86 per cent of the agency's target, the report found.

Scott has invested heavily in outreach to the normally Democratic-leaning Puerto Rican community.

Puerto Rican officials have previously blamed mismanagement on Fema, whereas President Trump has said authorities on the island are incompetent.

However Trump implied the death toll was revised for political reasons.

After almost a year of controversy over the figures, the governor of the USA island territory said the new estimate would now be considered the official death toll.

The latest official estimate, 2,975, comes from an independent study by public health researchers at George Washington University commissioned by the governor of Puerto Rico.

But Trump, that official said, was unwilling to admit even internally that more needed to be done on the island.

On "Outnumbered" on Thursday, Melissa Francis said she doesn't understand why Trump weighed in on the matter, calling it "incredibly distasteful" to debate Maria's death toll as another deadly hurricane bears down.

"Those are just the facts of what happens when a frightful hurricane hits an isolated place like an island", Ryan said when asked about Trump's tweet.

The mayor of Ceiba, Angel Cruz Ramos, told CNN he's grateful for the generosity, but believes that too much water was delivered at the wrong time. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3,000".

US President Donald Trump has rejected the widely accepted death toll in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria and claimed without citing evidence that "3000 people did not die".

After his tweets, Democrats accused Trump of minimising the death toll for callous political reasons.

She went on to say that when raw data is compared to the response to Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas to Harvey and Irma in Puerto Rico, it is vastly different.

The president, with some justification, has said the situation in Puerto Rico after Maria was exacerbated by the island's remote location and pre-existing infrastructure issues, such as an antiquated power grid. It made landfall on Puerto Rico on September 20, battering the island with winds of up to 155 miles per hour, ripping buildings apart and uprooting trees. A spokesman for former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who won the Florida GOP primary for governor with Trump's support, said the congressman did not agree with Trump's tweets.
