Ex-Trump Campaign Adviser Jailed

He then pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the his contacts with Joseph Mifsud, a London-based professor with connections to high-ranking Russian officials, who told him in late April 2016 that Russians had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

US District Judge Randolph Moss said that Papadopoulos' deception was "not a noble lie" and that he had lied because he wanted a job in the Trump administration and didn't want to jeopardise that possibility by being tied to the Russian Federation investigation.

George Papadopoulos, former campaign adviser for Donald Trump, arrives for sentencing with his wife Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos.

He was also the first to detail a member of the Trump campaign having knowledge of the Russian efforts to meddle while it was going on.

While this chapter of the Mueller investigation concludes for Papadopoulos, his testimony and information he provided as part of his plea deal could mean trouble for others in Trump's circle, including Mr. Trump himself. "I don't know him", Trump said. It had previously been reported that Trump "listened with interest", while Sessions opposed the idea.

In subsequent campaign communications, Papadopoulos was encouraged to pursue a Putin-Trump meeting. According to the indictment, Papadopoulos was told by a Maltese professor in April 2016 that Russian officials had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Weeks later, stolen Clinton emails were leaked over the internet by what USA intelligence chiefs now say were Russian intelligence actors.

It was revealed in December that it was drunken comments by Papadopoulos to an Australian diplomat that triggered the Russian Federation probe in the first place. Papadopoulos says he had nothing to do with the leak.

Prosecutors wrote that those false statements, made during a January 2017 interview with federal investigators, caused the FBI to miss an opportunity to interview Mifsud while he was in the United States.

His lawyers say Papadopoulous acted out of a "misguided sense of loyalty to his master" and to preserve his career options in the new administration.

In his pre-sentencing statement, Papadopoulos admitted lying to FBI investigators in January 2017 but said it had been out of a desire to protect his career and a naive loyalty to the Trump administration.
