Ex-PM Nawaz, daughter Maryam released on parole for Begum Kulsooms funeral

The former first lady of Pakistan is survived by her husband Nawaz Sharif and four children, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma.

According to Pakistan media Geo TV, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif and her son, Hussain Nawaz, confirmed that the former first lady breathed her last at a clinic in London.

"An application will be submitted to the jail authorities seeking the release of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt. (Retd.) Mohammed Safdar, and we are sure that they will attend the funeral of Kulsoom Nawaz", he told Arab News. PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif will be proceeding to London to bring Kulsoom's body to Pakistan.

Ms Nawaz was born Kulsoom Rehana Butt in 1950 to a businessman and investor, Mohammad Hafeez Butt, and his wife Razia Begum.

According to well-placed sources at the Interior Ministry, the trio, now imprisoned at the Adiala jail, will be granted parole from the time of Begum Kulsoom's funeral prayers till her burial.

She would not take to politics again until a year ago, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office.

But she could never return to the country to take her oath as a member of parliament.

Since then, Nawaz and Maryam have been making regular making trips to the United Kingdom to visit Kulsoom.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of Kulsoom Nawaz.

She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice in her lifetime. As a result, the family welcomed the military coup of 1977 which toppled Mr Bhutto's government and sent him to the gallows two years later following a controversial trial.

Begum Kulsoom led defiant, lonely protests against the Musharraf regime to get her husband freed from prison.

President Dr Arif Alvi has expressed grief over the passing away of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

PML-N leaders said her funeral will be held in Pakistan. "My condolences and prayers go to the Sharif family", the premier wrote in a tweet.

The Prime Minister has directed Pakistani High Commission in London to assist in provision of all necessary facilities to the heirs of the deceased.

Kulsoom belonged to a respected Lahori family of Kashmiri origin. "May God bless her soul".
