Dallas officer mistakes apartment for own, kills man

Dallas officer mistakes apartment for own, kills man

A police officer in the U.S. state of Texas has shot and killed a man in a flat after mistakenly thinking she was in her own unit, police say.

Reporters pressed the police chief about the officer's mental state when she entered the apartment at 1210 S. Lamar St.in Dallas - was she worn out, or under the influence? - but Hall did not want to speculate.

Authorities say the officer called dispatch to report the shooting. "And then she reported to responding officers that when she came home she entered into the victim's apartment believing it was her own apartment".

According to police, the officer, whose name hasn't been released, returned home in her uniform after her shift.

The officer, who was not identified, has been placed on leave while the incident is investigated by the Dallas County district attorney's office. Jean was later pronounced dead at Baylor University Medical Center.

Jean was the son of Allison Jean, former Permanent Secretary of the Department of Education, Innovation and Gender Relations for St. Lucia, according to St. Lucia Ambassador Anton Edmunds.

Botham's employer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, issued the following statement: "This is a awful tragedy". Rescue crews transported Jean to a hospital, where he later died.

Botham Shem Jean was once asked to lead a college chapel service with an hymn that was unfamiliar to the man known for his powerful singing voice. "Right now, there are more questions than we have answers".

Dallas' police chief says her department is seeking to charge a white officer with manslaughter in the killing of a black neighbor.

The woman is now "too scared to call police" in the event of an emergency because she's afraid the encounter will end in a tragedy, she said.

It was unclear if the officer knew Jean, 26, who lived in the same apartment complex as each other.

Jean, a native of St Lucia, was listed on LinkedIn as a risk assurance experienced associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

"A blood sample was drawn to test for drugs and alcohol, we are in the process of obtaining a warrant, and we have also invited the Texas Rangers to conduct an independent investigation", she said, referring to the state law enforcement agency.
