British ex-Foreign Minister Johnson attacks government on taxes, rail

Britain's ruling Conservative party was locked in a new row over Brexit Sunday after Boris Johnson said the government's strategy put the country in a "suicide vest", with Brussels holding the detonator.

Allies of Boris Johnson, the former foreign secretary, have hit back after Downing Street was accused of compiling a "dirty dossier" created to damage his reputation. "Comparing the PM to that isn't amusing'".

Mr Johnson's own leadership ambitions may have suffered a blow by the revelation that his marriage has broken down, although some Westminster commentators suggest having the break-up made public now clears away a potential obstacle on the way to Number 10. "It is one of the mysteries of the current Brexit negotiations that the United Kingdom is so utterly feeble", he wrote.

He said the column should mark the "political end of Boris Johnson".

The Brexit plan recently proposed by Theresa May is "a suicide vest" wrapped around the British constitution, and the detonator has been handed to Brussels, Boris Johnson has said.

Mr Grieve said "every option on Brexit is worse than our staying in the European Union and he bears a substantial measure of responsibility as to how we got into this mess".

Alan Duncan, a minister at the Foreign Office, saying it marked "one of the most disgusting moments in modern British politics". "There is no justification for such an outrageous, inappropriate and hurtful analogy", Burt said.

At least Johnson has been supported by the odd Brexiteer, with Nadine Dorries and Andrew Bridgen out to bat for him.

"We look like a seven stone weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500lb gorilla", Johnson wrote. He said that Mr Johnson should "grow up".

His extraordinary comments came just hours after he announced he would be divorcing his wife of 25 years, Marina Wheeler.

He said the public finances are improving and "now is the time for this Conservative government to show how a post-Brexit Britain will be a happy and dynamic economy that fosters enterprise, that rewards the strivers and the innovators, and where people can hope to take home more of their pay to their families".

With Johnson and his allies "intent on using the party conference to comprehensively derail the Chequers plan, also thus dealing a significant blow to May, the battle lines are set to become further entrenched in the coming weeks", says The Guardian.

"We do need to spend more on the NHS (National Health Service)".

In a sign of the war within the party, The Sunday Times reported that Mrs May's aides had drawn up a dossier on Mr Johnson during an aborted run for the leadership in 2016.

Mr Javid said he did not expect a no-deal outcome, adding: "I'm glad the police and other experts are looking into this and thinking what might happen in a no-deal scenario".

The announcement followed newspaper allegations the former London mayor had been having an extra-marital affair.
