Brett Kavanaugh sidesteps Senate questions on Roe v Wade

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh repeatedly stressed the importance of judicial independence as he faced questioning at his confirmation hearing Wednesday from senators, including Democrats who fear he would be President Donald Trump's man on the high court.

When Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of DE, who is one of the Senators who has introduced legislation to protect the Special Counsel's office, asked about the article Kavanaugh authored in 1998 arguing that a President can fire a Special Counsel investigating him, he declined to delve into any more detail.

Those expecting a showdown throughout Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Senate confirmation hearing were not disappointed Tuesday. The 76-year-old has been one of the Supreme Court nominee's champions, working to guide his nomination through the Senate.

On Wednesday, Kavanaugh's said the message of the decision, which he called one of the greatest moments in USA judicial history, was clear. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) whose remarks were most profound. But he refused to provide direct answers to Democrats who wanted him to say whether there are limits on a president's power to issue pardons, including to himself or in exchange for a bribe.

Booker says the email's subject is racial profiling and he wants it released publicly.

Brett Kavanaugh is sworn-in before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said to Kavanaugh, who sat quietly amidst the chaos of the hearing.

"If the Supreme Court were to adopt your reasoning", she said, "I feel the number of victims would continue to grow". Secrecy that goes directly to questions of executive authority that in turn go directly to the heart of a case a Justice Kavanaugh could soon hear: Can President Trump, already an unindicted coconspirator, exercise some sort of constitutional privilege to avoid responding to a subpoena or demand for grand jury testimony in a pending criminal case?

They are concerned that Kavanaugh will push the court to the right on abortion, guns and other issues, and that he will side with Trump in cases stemming from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

Kozinski retired in December after several female former law clerks and colleagues accused him of sexual misconduct. We have previously expressed our concern that the Committee is receiving only a small fraction of Judge Kavanaugh's White House record, filtered through an opaque private review process being conducted by outside private lawyers rather than the nonpartisan National Archives.

"Religious liberty is another fundamental protection, and the Democrats in the Senate have gotten extremely radical", he said.

Separately, Miranda emailed Kavanaugh and another White House official that "intel suggests that Leahy will focus on all things money" at a 2002 confirmation hearing. Party leaders have said they hope to have Kavanaugh confirmed by a floor vote by early October, when the next Supreme Court term begins.

But with Wednesday offering the first opportunity for lawmakers to question Kavanaugh, it is unclear what disruptions, if any, will emerge.

Judiciary Committee members Sen.

Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge in Washington, D.C., described himself as an "independent" judge.

"If Brett Kavanaugh becomes a supreme court justice, will he help gut or overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in America?"

"I'm not going to answer hypothetical questions of that sort", Kavanaugh said. He said in the interview that he was never charged in the matter and that he never it considered his action to be hacking, because the documents were on a shared computer server.

They railed against the unusual vetting process by Republicans that failed to include documents from three years Kavanaugh worked in the Bush administration, and 100,000 more pages withheld by the Trump White House. "This is a mockery and a travesty of justice", shouted one woman.
