U.S. spy agencies suspect North Korea building new missiles

Some 5,300 of those are believed to have been lost in North Korea, which is separated from the South by one of the world's most fortified borders.

The Post noted that the new intelligence does not hint at an expansion of North Korea's capabilities but shows that the country is continuing to work on advanced weapons weeks after US President Donald Trump declared on Twitter that Pyongyang was "no longer a nuclear threat".

Observers also said that the agenda could include the issue of fostering peace around the Northern Limit Line, a de facto maritime border, and a joint project to excavate remains of troops who were killed during the 1950-53 Korean War and left in the DMZ. Between 1990 and 1994, North Korea unilaterally handed over 208 caskets to the US, which turned out to contain remains of far more than 208 individuals, although forensics specialists thus far have established 181 identities.

Efforts to recover remains in North Korea have been fraught with political and other obstacles since the war's end.

"With these 55 sets of remains that are being repatriated, there was one single soldier's dog tag", NPR's Anthony Kuhn reported from the Osan Air Base.

"Regime survival and perpetuation of Kim family rule" are Kim's guiding principles, he said.

'Only when their bodies are returned will the families be able to say goodbye to their loved ones in a meaningful way, ' the VOKS said in a letter to Rutte.

Joel Wit, a former State Department negotiator and founder of 38 North, a North Korea monitoring project, said it was unrealistic to expect North Korea to stop its programs "until the ink is dry on an agreement".

The July 27 honorable carry ceremony at Osan Air Base, South Korea, transferred 55 boxes of remains covered by the United Nations flag. "This is a solemn reminder that our work is not complete until all have been accounted for, no matter how long it takes to do so", said Vincent K. Brooks, Commander of United States Forces Korea. Satellite images and previous reports about a secret uranium enrichment facility suggest that the North Koreans are upgrading their arsenal from a research facility located just outside of Pyongyang.

"I don't think North Korea is refusing to give dog tags when it has more but it probably doesn't have dog tags lying around", he said.

Vice Pres. Mike Pence is in Hawaii to receive the remains of fallen US service members who fought in the Korean War.

The Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

North Korea has provided nearly no information to help identify the individuals whose remains are being repatriated to the United States last week, a USA defense official told VOA.

The Pentagon said it was "absolutely" considering the possibility of sending personnel to North Korea for this goal.

It wasn't the first time Trump has suggested that China was relaxing pressure on North Korea amid the simmering trade dispute.

The ARF, slated for Saturday (Aug 4), will be the highest-profile diplomatic event involving North Korea since its historic summit with the United States here on June 12. The U.S. says it does not pay directly for the remains but has given the North Koreans "compensation" for the costs of the recovery in the past.
