Trump acknowledges goal of meeting with Russian lawyer

With President Donald Trump apparently admitting on Twitter that his son, Donald Trump, Jr., met with Russian officials at Trump Tower in 2016 to get "information" on then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin said in a recent interview that the president could be prosecuted for collusion once he leaves office. "Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam", Trump said of Cohen.

The meeting has come under intense scrutiny from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with a Russian effort to sway the 2016 election in the Republican's favour.

U.S. President Donald Trump, in the midst of a working vacation, unleashed a new barrage of attacks on the national news media Sunday, saying it was "very risky & sick!"

But Mr Trump still insisted he did not know about the meeting at Trump Tower between Donald Jr and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a lawyer with links to the Kremlin. There have been no reports that information about Clinton was offered or exchanged.

"The question is what law, statute or rule or regulation has been violated and nobody has pointed to one", Sekulow said Sunday. A July 2017 statement dictated by the president read: "We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago".

On Sunday morning, Trump responded to reports in the Washington Post and on CNN that he was concerned Donald Jr. could be in legal trouble.

"I wasn't involved in the statement drafting at all, nor was the president", Sekulow claimed in July 2017. Previously, all that hinged on the claims that since they didn't get any dirt out of the meeting, it can't be illegal, which would hold up better if things like "attempted burglary" didn't exist.

On Sunday, Trump tweeted an apparent response to stories by CNN and The Washington Post that said he is anxious about Donald Trump Jr.'s legal exposure following the infamous 2016 meeting. Trump repeated his previous claims that he did not know in advance about the meeting.

"I have no knowledge at all of Don Jr. being told he is the target of any investigation and I have no knowledge of him being interviewed by the special counsel", Mr. Sekulow said Sunday.

"I had bad information at that time and made a mistake in my statement", Sekulow said on ABC's "This Week". "They can also cause War!" And at a trio of rallies, he escalated his already vitriolic rhetoric toward the media, savaging the press for unflattering coverage and, he feels, bias. "And I fear that the message that the Kremlin cares most about is what they hear from Donald Trump, and that is still one of denial and cover for the Russians".
