Rick Gates testifies he committed crimes while working for Paul Manafort

Rick Gates, Manafort's former business partner and right-hand man, appears set to undergo a brutal cross-examination by defense attorneys who are keen on damaging his credibility. Manafort's trial is the first trial associated with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Trump's ties to Russian Federation.

Manafort's defense team wants to pin any potential crimes on Gates, who admitted in court he embezzled "several hundred thousand" dollars from Manafort in that period. They were the first two people indicted by Mueller's grand jury.

Rick Gates, who is cooperating with U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, testified under questioning by lawyer Kevin Downing that he provided false information to investigators before he pleaded guilty to charges in February. While outside the scope of the trial, Mueller is also investigating whether Trump campaign members coordinated with Russian officials, an allegation President Donald Trump denies.

He has also sought to blame Mr Gates for the crimes.

Gates also described to jurors how he repeatedly submitted fake financial documents at Manafort's behest as his former boss became concerned he was paying too much in taxes and, later, that his funds were drying up. Laporta said she had no indication that the loan from Deripaska had been paid off.

But she said she believed Manafort was directing Gates' efforts to disguise loans and hide income, noting that Manafort was copied on her email traffic with Gates. When Robert Mueller began investigating Russian interference past year, Manafort's questionable lobbying work - the sort of activity that has historically rarely been investigated in Washington - was put under a microscope, exposing him and his associates.

Accountant Cindy LaPorta - who was granted immunity from prosecution - said on Friday she suspected that Gates was misleading her about Mr Manafort's finances.

Ellis tried to hurry the prosecution along throughout the day, at one point scolding Andres as he asked Gates about Manafort's political work in Ukraine.

In stunning testimony at Manafort's trial on tax and fraud charges, Gates stated he and Manafort had 15 foreign accounts they did not report to the federal government, and knew it was illegal.

Gates's appearance in court marked a dramatic moment in the probe: the first visible case of a witness flipping, or turning on friends or colleagues in a case. Gates joined Trump's campaign as deputy campaign manager in June 2016 and continued in other roles after Manafort was ousted.

During the testimony, Manafort did not stare Gates down as he did on Monday.

"In Cyprus, they were documented as loans". Gates pleaded guilty to financial fraud and to lying to investigators as he negotiated the plea agreement earlier this year. But Trump has shown interest in the proceedings, tweeting support for Manafort and suggesting he had been treated worse than gangster Al Capone.

"There were no FBARs in FinCEN's system of record", Liss said, indicating that Manafort and his tax preparers did not disclose any of the more than 30 bank accounts owned by his offshore shell companies to the IRS on his tax returns.

Some of the maneuvers were at the request of Gates, while others implicated Manafort, Laporta testified.
