Parasite risk in salads and wraps sold at Kroger, Walgreens, Trader Joe's

After an FDA analysis confirmed the presence of Cyclospora in an expired salad mix containing romaine lettuce, Fresh Express began informing companies that received products of concern about the results.

The products being recalled were all produced between July 15 and July 18, with sell by dates from July 18 to July 23.

Food inspection officials are concerned that some of the products sold at Trader Joe's, Kroger and Walgreens may still be in home refrigerators and have urged consumers to throw them out or return them to stores.

Cyclospora is a one-celled organism that can wreak havoc on the human body's digestive system, causing explosive diarrhea, nausea and fatigue.

The Cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness after people consume food or water contaminated by it, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A Walgreens spokesperson told TIME that affected products were available only at a "limited number" of stores in IL, and were immediately pulled from store shelves upon learning of the recall.

Consumers may have already ingested the parasite, and it may be incubating without producing symptoms, the USDA said.

Distributed nationwide by Caito Foods of Indianapolis, the possibly tainted products were sold by retailers including Kroger, Trader Joe's and Walgreens.

The outer limit of the incubation period for this batch of food is August 6, the USDA said, and it could be up to six weeks before officials begin to receive reports of illness.

Possible Cyclospora contamination led McDonald's earlier this month to voluntarily stop selling salads at about 3,000 restaurants in 14 states until they could switch to a lettuce-mix supplier other than Fresh Express.

The department said 160 cases of cyclospora infections were also linked to an Independence Day celebration July 3 at the Evanston Golf Club in Skokie.
