'Meyered' in controversy: OSU coach placed on leave

Meyer was placed on administrative leave by Ohio State on Wednesday after a report emerged that said Meyer knew that his former wide receivers coach, Zach Smith, had been accused of domestic violence by his now ex-wife in 2015. It is easy to demand that Urban Meyer "be held accountable" ...

Spurrier says he was always a head coach who had a zero-tolerance policy if one of his players (or coaches) physically assaulted a woman.

In an interview with McMurphy, Courtney reportedly said she and Shelley regularly talked about Zach's abuse in 2015.

"If you see something, say something", Muschamp said.

"Shelley said she was going to have to tell Urban", Courtney told McMurphy. If she did tell her husband about the 2015 incident, then Meyer - Ohio's highest paid state employee - was lying to both the media and the public when he claimed the accusation was fabricated.

Ohio State revealed the goal of the group. The season starts September 1 with a game against Oregon State in Columbus.

If Ohio State learned of the 2015 incident - and Smith remained on staff - it also is a big-time moral failure by the university and athletics department.

Either way, Meyer has put his employer in a hard situation, as evidenced by him being placed on leave less than two days prior to the start of the team's fall camp.

The group also will "be available to provide consultation and advice and assist with communication to the full board on the matter", the university said in a statement. Of all the holes hes got to fill in Ohio States starting lineup this fall, Meyer recently has talked about the offensive and defensive lines as being the most critical areas of concern.

Meyer was out of coaching for a season but was hired by Ohio State in November 2011.

Smith was sacked last week after an accusation of domestic violence against his wife Courtney came to light.

Smith was - and should have been - fired last week.

Muschamp was asked Thursday about issues of domestic violence that can crop up around a football program.

Zach Smith was charged in May with misdemeanor criminal trespass. Charges were never filed. The 34-year-old Zach Smith is the grandson of Meyer's mentor and former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce. He pleaded not guilty, and a hearing is scheduled for Friday.

At media days in Chicago last week, Meyer acknowledged the 2009 incident.
