First woman fined in Denmark for wearing full-face veil

First woman fined in Denmark for wearing full-face veil

Both women have been charged with disturbing the peace, The Copenhagen Post newspaper reported.

The woman was fined 1,000 Danish kroner (£120) and told to either remove the veil or leave the centre.

Police say they were called and when they reviewed CCTV, informed the woman she would be charged if she refused to take her niqab off.

When the ban went into effect, dozens of women came out in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, to protest it.

The police took pictures of the woman for evidence.

Violating the regulation results in a fine of 1,000 kroner ($156). Under the new law, police will be allowed to order people to remove face veils in public areas.

"During the fight her niqab came off, but by the time we arrived she had put it back on again", Borchersen told Ritzau.

Police took a photograph of the woman wearing the niqab, and obtained security camera footage from the shopping centre of the incident.

At the protest, Reuters reports that many defied the new ban by wearing one of the prohibited veils - the niqab, which covers every part of the face apart from the eyes.

Some Muslim women have said they will not adhere to the law - which carries a 10,000 ($1,500; £1,200) kroner penalty for repeat offenders.

Along with the niqab and the burqa, the ban applies to balaclavas, masks, false beards and other accessories.

Supporters of the law, meanwhile, claim the law will better integrate Muslims into Danish society. Some other European countries have debated the issue.

Critics see the law - approved by parliament in May - as encouraging anti-immigrant sentiments, pointing to the very small number of Muslim women in Denmark who actually wear full-face veils.
