Tropical Storm Chris barrelling toward Newfoundland

Tropical Storm Chris barrelling toward Newfoundland

Chris has become the second hurricane of the 2018 season, but it will continue to pull moisture away from Florida.

Hurricane Chris is now tracking the East Coast of the United States and is set to cross the Atlantic to the UK.

As of 11 a.m. ET Wednesday, the storm was about 440 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, moving northeast at 22 mph. Maximum sustained winds settled near 100 miles per hour, and the storm was not expected to gain strength the rest of today.

A hurricane across the Atlantic may "influence" Britain's hot weather possibly bringing wind and rain next week. Remnants of Tropical Storm Beryl continued to be a rainmaker in the Caribbean, affecting the Dominican Republic and Haiti as well as Western Cuba, the NHC said.

According to weather forecasters, Hurricane Chris is expected to gain strength throughout Wednesday before weakening Thursday as it heads out to sea and away from USA coastal areas.

"A further increase in forward speed is expected as a strong deep-layer trough digs southeastward along the US east coast, accelerating the cyclone at forward speeds of 25-30 kt by 48 hours and beyond", according to the NHC. Atlantic Canada residents are being warned these conditions could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Southern coastlines of that region could also expect storm surges.

Chris is expected to be a post-tropical storm by the time it arrives Thursday, slowly weakening as it moves toward the Avalon Peninsula.

"A continued northeastward motion accompanied by a steady increase in forward speed is expected through Thursday night.", forecasters said.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.
