State regulators move to order Charter out of NY

State regulators move to order Charter out of NY

Spectrum reportedly failed to meet deadlines, attempted to skirt obligations to serve rural communities and used unsafe practices in the field.

In the meantime, Charter must comply with all local franchises it holds in New York State and all obligations under Public Service Law and commission regulations. Lawyers for the PSC also took steps in State Supreme Court in Albany to seek additional penalties. Chater has 60 days to complete services as the state transition to a new provider.

Spectrum is owned by Charter Communications, which merged with Time Warner Cable.

"These recurring failures led the Commission to the broader conclusion that the company was not interested in being a good corporate citizen and that the Commission could no longer in good faith and conscience allow it to operate in NY", the commission said in a press release.

"Charter's repeated failures to serve New Yorkers and honor its commitments are well documented and are only getting worse", PSC Chair John Rhodes said". Charter has also continued to make the false claim in advertisements and other public statements that it is exceeding its obligations to New York State, notwithstanding that the Commission has previously directed Charter to cease its misleading campaign and has referred the matter to the New York Attorney General for appropriate action.

Chad Hume, a longtime official overseeing telecommunications at the public service commission who retired in 2015, said he can't recall an action like this from the regulator in his decades in the industry.

On Friday, July 27, ABC7 reported that state is giving Spectrum the boot after it failed to meet demands that were set in place back in 2016.

"In the weeks leading up to an election, rhetoric often becomes politically charged", Russell sad. In response to the decision by the commission, Charter noted that it had extended its reach to "more than 86,000 NY homes and businesses", which is objectively less than 145,000.

He added that the company tried to "mislead the public" by saying it had provided new service to 12,467 addresses in New York City, when in fact those households already had service. We asked Charter those questions today and will update this story if we get a response. The combined Charter-Time Warner Cable operation is the second-largest cable company in the country.
