Sen. Susan Collins Won't Support A Supreme Court Nominee Who Opposes Roe

Abortion rights is emerging as a litmus test for the next Supreme Court nominee, with Democrats and at least one moderate Republican declaring they wouldn't support a nominee who opposes the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that established a woman's right to abortion.

"A candidate who would overturn Roe would not be acceptable", said Collins, "because I believe that they have demonstrated a disrespect for the vital principle of stare decisis".

With Trump committed to picking from a list of 25 potential nominees that he compiled with guidance from conservatives, Schumer said any of them would be "virtually certain" to favor overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that affirmed women's right to abortion.

The president interviewed four candidates on Monday and has said he plans to reveal his choice on July 9.

Another topic of discussion is Roe v. Wade, the ruling that made abortion legal in the U.S. However, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said we likely won't know where Trump's nominee stands on the issue.

Justin Clark, in his position as director of the Office of Public Liaison, will oversee outreach with key constituencies, coalitions, grass-roots organizations and allies, the White House said.

"I'm going to pick someone who is outstanding", he said.

A person familiar with the process said White House officials are focused primarily on five federal appeals court judges - Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Raymond Kethledge and Amul Thapar. Some were confirmed by the Senate for their federal posts as recently as past year. Trump also spoke about the increasing number of Democrats who have called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), something Trump said he considers also considers beneficial for Republicans headed into the midterms.

"The dogma lives loudly within you and that's a concern", Feinstein said, "when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for for years in this country". But his step away from the day-to-day operations of the White House press shop could also signal the beginning of his exit from the White House, which Shah has been mulling in recent weeks.

But the eventual nominee already faces a hurdle: Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, and Sen. He played the same role in the successful confirmation of Justice Neil Gorsuch previous year.

Trump told reporters at the White House that he will meet with two or three more candidates and decide on a nominee in the next few days. What I want to see is a nominee who, regardless of his or her personal views on the very hard and contentious life issue, is going to respect precedent.

"The main thing that the president is looking for are people that fit the qualifications that you would want in a Supreme Court justice: tremendous intellect, someone who will stick to upholding the Constitution, and somebody who has great judicial temperament", Sanders said.

With a week left before President Trump is set to announce his pick to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, those opposing the nomination are seeking to mobilize.
