Earlier Maryam tweeted that her mother Begum Kulsoom Nawaz had opened her eyes for a few seconds on Thursday for the first time in weeks, she also requested her followers to pray for her mother's well-being.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were sentenced to prison in a corruption case on July 6 along with Maryam Nawaz's husband Captain Safdar.

Their flight, EY243 departed more than two hours late from Terminal 3 at Abu Dhabi airport. They will then be taken to Islamabad by helicopter and ferried to Adiala jail. Deputy Inspector General Operations Shahzad Akbar said 10,000 police officers will be deployed across Lahore on Friday to "maintain law and order".

"Maryam and I are coming back to face prison and even if they send me to the gallows, we know that freedom can not be won without sacrifice".

Nawaz Sharif on-board flight had said, "I'll be taken straight to jail".

Pakistan's third major political movement, the Pakistan Peoples Party, joined the criticism of the crackdown, with its prime ministerial candidate Bilawal Bhutto Zardari questioning why Sharif's supporters would be prevented from gathering.

Sharif, who was in London with his wife and children when the verdict was announced, said he is returning to Pakistan from London to fulfil his pledge to "honour the vote".

Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in jail and Maryam 7 years jail term.

Pakistan's media regulator has ordered television channels to stop live telecast of briefings of political leaders containing "defamatory and derogatory content" ahead for former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's return to the country on Friday, NDTV reported.

A police official who asked not to be identified said more than 100 PML-N workers had been detained.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam, who were handed down 10-year and seven-year sentences respectively last week, arrived in Abu Dhabi and will transfer onto Lahore. His brother Shehbaz became PML-N's president, but Sharif remains the power behind the throne.

PML-N leaders say authorities have began a crackdown against union council leaders, the street-level party workers who bring out people on the streets.
