An awkward encounter took place at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Friday with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Donald Trump Jr., the USA president's eldest son, waiting at the same gate.

Trump's accusations about Mueller's alleged conflicts of interest came amid a string of tweets in which he claimed the special counsel's team is filled with Democrats.

President Donald Trump renewed claims on Sunday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has "conflicts of interest" that should bar him from probing Russian interference into the 2016 election, saying the pair had a business relationship.

Mueller's obstruction inquiry also includes a review of misleading White House statements and possible pardon offers to potential witnesses, the article says.

The Times, citing three people briefed on the matter, said Mueller was also combing through negative statements from Trump toward Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former FBI Director James Comey. Finally, the president said, Mr. Mueller had been interviewed to return as the F.B.I. director the day before he was appointed special counsel in May. The special counsel is seeking to question Trump to determine intent, the article reports.

Around the time he said publicly last summer that he would have chosen another attorney general had he known Mr. Sessions was going to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, Mr. Trump tried behind closed doors to persuade Mr. Sessions to reverse that decision.

"Also, why is Mueller only appointing Angry Dems, some of whom have worked for Crooked Hillary, others, including himself, have worked for Obama. And why isn't Mueller looking at all of the criminal activity & real Russian Collusion on the Democrats side-Podesta, Dossier?" Therefore, the Witch Hunt is an illegal Scam!' Trump blared on the social media site.

Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special counsel, confirmed that Mueller is pictured in the photo "waiting to board a flight". "We are very confident of the accuracy and reliability of the information that has been provided by Mr. Trump, Jr., and on his behalf".
