Kevin Anderson vs John Isner, Wimbledon 2018 semi-final

Kevin Anderson vs John Isner, Wimbledon 2018 semi-final

It was the second longest Wimbledon match ever - and longest Wimbledon semi-final - as it lasted 6 hours and 35 minutes.

American tennis player John Isner lost to Kevin Anderson in a record-setting semifinal at Wimbledon that lasted over six hours on Friday.

"I really hope this a sign for grand slams to change this format. At the end you feel like it is a draw, but someone has to win", a drained Anderson, who had sensationally beaten defending champion Roger Federer in another nail-biting five setter two days ago, said.

By the time the fourth set had begun, it was clear that this match, as some regarded it, was no warm-up act for the Nadal-Djokovic semifinal to be played later on the same court - not a starter for the main course.

Known for his marathon matches, the ninth-seeded Isner lost to the eight-seeded Anderson in a grueling six-hour-and-36-minute match, with the final set alone lasting for almost three hours.

Anderson had already won the first point of the game but was blown back while returning yet another of Isner's monstrous serves. But Anderson roared back, outlasting the great Swiss to win 2-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 13-11. "I personally think a sensible option would be 12-All", said Isner who was bidding to reach his first Slam final at the 41st attempt.

Anderson finished with 49 aces and 118 winners; Isner had 53 aces and 129 winners.

Anderson will now have to recover quickly in order to overcome a giant of a different kind in the men's finals on Sunday: either the top-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain, a two-time victor at Wimbledon, or three-time champion Djokovic, who posted a picture on social media of himself playing marbles.

John Isner and Kevin Anderson possess two of the most powerful serves in tennis, and simply could not find a break in their Wimbledon semifinal. Anderson finally earned the must-have, go-ahead service break with the help of a point in which the right-hander tumbled to his backside, scrambled back to his feet and hit a shot lefty. The two also played each other in college, when Anderson was at IL and Isner was at Georgia.

In the fifth set, Isner even jokingly asked the umpire if they could just play a tiebreak.

At one point in the fifth set, a spectator shouted, "Come on, guys!" Two points later, Anderson had the vital break to lead 25-24 before serving out the match.

Kevin Anderson edged a tight opening set 7-6 (6) against American John Isner. "I don't know", Isner said.
