Julius Randle signs with the Pelicans to terrorize opposing frontcourts

Julius Randle signs with the Pelicans to terrorize opposing frontcourts

LeBron James' decision to join the Lakers marked an excellent start to Magic Johnson's plan to turn Los Angeles into a contender. Here's what we know so far on the Lakers roster and free agent signings. In doing so, it allowed Los Angeles to match any deal that the talented big man could sign elsewhere. Or would the Lakers just do something flat-out weird.

Think about this - the Pels lost two vital elements from last year's playoff team who accepted one-year deals worth $9 million and $5.4 million, respectively.

A person with knowledge of the situation says Rondo has agreed to sign a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

For the Lakers, the rebuilding process is effectively over after James agreed a four-year, $154 million contract. That cap space could increase to $16 million if the team uses the waive-and-stretch provision on Luol Deng, which would stretch out the $36 million owed to him over five seasons.

While it is hard to part with Randle, Los Angeles has been linked to Kawhi Leonard, who has requested a trade from the San Antonio Spurs.

The Laker experiment this season is going to be fascinating to watch.

The Lakers originally gave him a qualifying offer, which made Randle a restricted free agent. He's led the National Basketball Association in assists three times over his career, averaging north of 11 assists per game in those campaigns.

The other is that if they want to make a trade for a star, the salaries of players like Rondo, Stephenson, and Caldwell-Pope are easier to trade for salary-matching purposes. He hasn't shown many ill-effects of the injury, having only missed a combined nine games over the past three seasons.
