Giuliani: Trump interview in Russia investigation still possible

Giuliani: Trump interview in Russia investigation still possible

Cohen, who previously worked for Trump, told Stephanopoulos last week that his "first loyalty" lies with his family, not the president.

Giuliani also said he did not believe Trump knew, beforehand or afterward, about a controversial meeting involving his son Donald Jr., some advisers and a Russian lawyer offering "dirt" on his election opponent, Hillary Clinton.

"We have not", Giuliani said.

"I have no concerns that Michael Cohen is going to do anything but tell the truth", he said.

The New York Times, which first reported on the new demands, reported that Giuliani has acknowledged that Mueller is unlikely to agree to them, and also left open the possibility that Trump may still agree to be interviewed. "As long as he tells the truth, we're home free".

The enabling documents for the probe authorize Mr. Mueller to investigate "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump" as well as "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation". As a result, he claimed, he could confidently say that Trump had nothing to answer.

"It's our firm belief, and we think nothing contradicts this, the president did nothing wrong", he said. "It cast a taint over the entire investigation", Mr. Giuliani said on ABC.

Kasowitz says Comey stonewalled the president's request to clear his name in order to "sustain an investigative cloud" over his head that would make it hard for Trump to fire him.

But some analysts have drawn comparisons between Cohen's story and that of former Trump aide Michael Flynn, who was charged by Mueller's team past year.

As a former NY mayor, Giuliani has known Trump for years and was reportedly considered as a possible attorney general.

On CNN's "State of the Union", host Dana Bash asked if Giuliani was going back on his past comments that he didn't think Cohen would "flip" on Trump. "What I do know is, there's no evidence of wrongdoing with President Trump".

But Giuliani told the Times it was unlikely Mueller would accept the demands.

Cohen's hiring of Davis, as well as his comments to ABC last week, increased speculation that Trump's former fixer was inching closer to cooperating with federal prosecutors rather than face serious charges stemming from his businesses and payments made to women, including Daniels, in order to secure their silence over alleged affairs. He said that the White House required not evidence of a criminal deed but at least some factual basis supporting suspicion of a crime.
