Five injured as bridge falls near Andheri station

The Gokhale bridge that connects Andheri East and Andheri West in suburban Mumbai, collapsed on the tracks near Andheri railway station. Chandrashekhar Sawant, the alert motorman of a Churchgate-Dahanu train, was barely 55 metres away from the bridge when it collapsed.

Commercial inspector, Surat railway station, Ganesh Jadhav said, "The railway over bridge has fallen on the tracks resulting the disruption of train services. Fire brigade, Mumbai police and ward staff have rushed to the spot", said the official adding no casualty was reported so far. Six people have reportedly been injured. Do not think anyone is trapped under debris. "A major accident was averted as it was peak hour and a lot of people were around", said Sawant. Meanwhile, Fadnavis also asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner to increase the frequency of BEST buses for the convenience of commuters.

Rainfall is expected to cross 90mm in some parts of the city today.

Coming nine months after the Elphinstone Road FOB crash and stampede that left 23 commuters dead, Tuesday's incident instilled fear among the commuters, especially since at least three jam-packed locals had passed the bridge seconds before the crash.

The Western Railway resumed services between Bandra and Churchgate and between Goregaon and Virar around 9 a.m. Services to Churchgate and CST from Goregaon started around 2.15 p.m. WR resumed services on the fast corridor by late evening. "Our officers have reached to the spot and accessing the situation", chief PRO of western railway Ravinder Bhakar told PTI.

Officials of various agencies including western railway, State Govt., local authorities, NDRF and Mumbai Police are working together to clear the tracks between Andheri and Vile Parle.

As a seasoned driver of Mumbai suburban trains, Chadrashekhar Sawant is no stranger to mounting professional challenges during monsoons in the coastal city, yet what he managed to do on Tuesday morning is widely being hailed as heroic-and rightfully so.
