Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok denies bias at hearing full of fireworks

Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok denies bias at hearing full of fireworks

President Donald Trump may be out of the country, but Robert Mueller's investigation into possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation grinds on.

Strzok's anti-Trump text messages took center stage and caused congressional leaders to question Strzok on his partisan bias over the course of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton's use of her email server.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., sent a letter on Wednesday to Page's lawyer, telling her that unless Page agreed to testify publicly before their panels on Thursday at 10 a.m. or behind closed doors on Friday at 10 a.m., the GOP would formally seek to hold her in contempt.

Goodlatte threatened to hold Strzok in contempt after the committee devolved into a partisan brawl over whether Strzok could answer questions about the Russian Federation investigation. Democrats began interrupting Goodlatte, arguing that he did not have to answer.

Strzok tried to respond, but Gohmert cut him off, insisting that he was not allowed to answer due to hearing rules that the witness could only respond if a representative asked a direct question.

The House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena for Page's testimony earlier this week. Jerry Nadler of NY. "He is still an employee of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI's counsel has instructed him not to answer the question".

"Like many people, I had and expressed personal political opinions during an extraordinary presidential election. opinions that were not always expressed in terms I am proud of", he said.

Gowdy was repeatedly interrupted through the rest of his questions, while he and Strzok got into a heated exchange.

In the prepared remarks, Strzok acknowledges that while his text message criticism was "blunt", it was not directed at one person or political party, and included jabs not only at Trump, but also at Clinton as well as Sen.

"Do you need your medication?" a woman in the hearing shouted.

The Purple Heart typically is awarded to members of the US military who are wounded or killed by enemies in war.

"I don't give a damn what you appreciate, Agent Strzok", Gowdy said. "Agent Strzok had Donald Trump impeached before he even started investigating him". Gowdy blasted Strzok for saying in messages to Page that Trump was a "menace" who he would "stop", while the investigation was still in its infancy.

You need to understand that was written late at night, off the cuff, and it was in response to a series of events that included then-candidate Trump insulting the immigrant family of a fallen war hero, and my presumption based on that frightful, disgusting behavior that the American population would not elect someone demonstrating that behavior to be president of the United States. "Let me be clear, unequivocally and under oath: Not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took", he said in an opening statement.

Peter Strzok is about to testify.

The sharp tone of Strzok's statement sets the stage for a contentious hearing following hours of closed-door questioning last week.

Chairman Goodlatte made the announcement during an interview Thursday, saying the details are still being worked out.

The hearing reflected a little-discussed reality of public service: Law enforcement agents and other government workers are permitted to espouse political views but are expected to keep them separate from their work.

Strzok said he doesn't remember writing the text.

Krishnamoorthi, during a hearing with the House Oversight and Judiciary committees, was walking Strzok through a number of sections in the recent Justice Department Inspector General report on the FBI's handling of the Clinton investigation.
