Cornwall woman takes vehicle for accidental, two-week joyride

Cornwall woman takes vehicle for accidental, two-week joyride

In late June, an elderly woman rented a black Nissan Sentra, then went to the supermarket.

When a auto is stolen, it's atypical for anyone to laugh about it - the seriousness of what has been stolen, including what is possibly inside the vehicle, doesn't elicit a humorous response.

When the dots got connected in his mind, the manager drove the woman to the Walmart where her rented Nissan was still parked and called the police. Police located the owner soon after and the auto was returned to him.

"We investigate stolen vehicles but this is definitely a unique situation for us", said Stephanie MacRae, communications coordinator with Cornwall Police.

After 2 weeks, she came back to Enterprise return the vehicle, and she made sure she complained to the manager about giving her a dirty, obviously used auto.

The Infiniti owner came out and found his auto missing so he reported it stolen.

What started out as a routine auto rental turned into a lesson about the importance of not leaving electronic key fobs in unoccupied vehicles, according to police in Cornwall, Ont.

Not realizing it was a Nissan Infiniti instead of the Sentra, she drove off in the wrong auto.

"Once inside, the woman spoke to the manager and commented about how unkempt the inside of the vehicle was and the fact that there was a set of golf clubs in it as well", the Cornall Community Police Service said on its Facebook page.

In the end, both the auto rental company and the Infiniti owner retrieved their vehicles and there was a happy ending to the story. "The woman was not impressed and handed over the keys".

All was revealed when she finally returned the black Infiniti auto she had been driving, to a rental vehicle company, whereupon she was told it was the wrong vehicle and not the Nissan Sentra she had originally rented. The photos above also show how the cars aren't exactly the same but both black and similar!

The woman contacted police and explained how she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks.

An Ontario woman went on a two-week long joyride this summer, after accidentally mistaking someone else's vehicle as her own. The rental vehicle manager examined the woman's keys and noted that, in fact, she had rented a Nissan Sentra, while the keys in her possession belonged to a Nissan Infiniti.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a flawless reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles.

While they described it as a "happy ending to a complicated vehicle rental", police cast the story as a broader warning over electronic key fobs.
