Cavs select Bama's Sexton to help convince LeBron to stay

LeBron James has until June 29th to inform the Cavs of his decision to opt in or opt out of his contract for next year, but most believe that he will opt out, and at least test the free agency market, even if he does inevitably end up back in Cleveland.

With an eye toward rebuilding - and maybe persuading James to re-sign this summer - the Cavs selected Sexton, the lightning-quick Alabama point guard, on Thursday night with the No. 8 overall pick.

"We want to respect (LeBron's) space during the process...and I continue to have a really good dialogue with his management team as he goes through that process", said Altman. He's done that before, so this is nothing new for us.

"I've watched him play", Lue said. "He means the world to us and this franchise".

He returned to Cleveland in 2014, with a promise to bring a championship to "The Land" and did so successfully in 2016, as he produced one of the most virtuoso performances by any player, when his team went 1-3 down, only to win 4-3 in the 7-game series and LeBron James became an National Basketball Association champion for the 3rd time. After the Golden State Warriors swept them in this year's Finals, the Cavs' main concern shifted to keeping LeBron James committed to the franchise, and not leaving this summer. Over the course of his latest four-season stretch with the Cavs, LeBron's presence coincided with an average TickPick ticket cost increase of about $43 from 2013-14, when he played for the Heat.

"For example, if the Lakers simply don't have enough to get Kawhi over there and Paul George decides, "You know what, I'm good in OKC". The continual mortgaging of the future, however, has left Cleveland capped out with few avenues for improvement, while teams like the Warriors, Celtics and Sixers continue to get better thanks in large part to players they drafted themselves.

"Loved the substance and character that he was about, and then he came here and had an unbelievable workout", Altman said.

Collin Sexton to the Cleveland Cavaliers?

Love, who will turn 30 in September, averaged 17.6 points on 45.8 percent shooting (41.5 percent from 3) and 9.3 rebounds in 59 games during the regular season for the Cavs, missing a chunk of time with a hand injury. "You've got to say, 'How does this pick make us better?'" "We haven't had a lot of chances to develop guys". "That's the only thing that's going to keep him in Cleveland".
