Some men should consider prostate cancer screening, Task Force believes

Men 55 and older may not need to bother with prostate cancer screenings.

In 2012, the United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) stopped recommending PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing to screen for prostate cancer because the group thought it was more harmful than beneficial. However, with regard to older patients ( 70 years), the AUA stated that "select older, healthier men may garner a benefit" from PSA screening. There is also new information on active surveillance-a way of monitoring prostate cancer that may allow some men with low-risk prostate cancers to delay or, in some cases avoid, treatment with radiation or surgery.

Prostate cancer is the hugely diagnosed sort of cancer in men and is among the top death because of cancer in the US.

"Men with a family history of prostate cancer, who are West African or Caribbean ancestry, or who have an inherited gene mutation that predisposes them to prostate cancer, should be told that the recommendations do not fully apply to them, and they definitely should talk to their doctor about prostate cancer screening if they aren't already having it done", they said in an email.

The AUA commends the USPSTF for its decision to maintain its upgraded recommendations for prostate cancer screening in men ages 55 to 69. The harms resulting from screening may include false-positive results, which often lead to immediate, additional testing and years of additional close follow-up, including repeated blood tests and biopsies; over diagnosis, which is the diagnosis of prostate cancer in some men who would not have experienced symptoms during their lifetime; and potential harms related to treatment, which commonly include erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

The task force claims that the modification was mainly boosted by a study (European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer) conducted in Europe in 2014, as per a new evidence review and statement posted this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

USPSTF, Vice Chairman, Dr. Krist, Prof.at Virginia Commonwealth University, Family medicine, and Population Health, said, "The prolonged follow up of 10+ years in this research, which was not handy in 2012, had a huge contribution in the decision of making the changes in the guidelines of screening".
