Russian bombers intercepted off USA coast

It is the first incident of the kind since U.S. jets intercepted Russian aircraft over a year ago on May 3, 2017.

Two Tu-95 Bear bombers intruded into the 200-mile Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the Bering Sea near the Alaska coast early Friday, said Navy Capt. Scott Miller, chief spokesman for Northern Command and the U.S.

American F-22 fighter jets intercepted two Russian Tu-95 bomber off the coast of Alaska.

That much information was revealed in a statement issued to CNN by North American Aerospace Defense Command spokesman Canadian Army Major Andrew Hennessey.

The Russian aircraft were "intercepted and monitored by the F-22s until the bombers left the ADIZ along the Aleutian Island chain heading west", and never entered USA airspace, according to the statement.

United States F-22's intercepted two Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers near Alaska on Friday.

The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news website, first reported the intercept.

In January, a Russian Su-27 came within 1.5 meters of a U.S. Navy surveillance plane while it was flying in worldwide airspace over the Black Sea.

Miller said the Russian bombers, decades-old aircraft classified by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as the "Bear", were flying in accordance with global norms.

Miller declined to say how close the bombers came to USA land.

There have also been encounters in European airspace between Russian warplanes and military aircraft of members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance.
