Pres. Trump Approves Financial Aid for Hawaii Over Volcanic Eruption

A new fissure roaring like jet engines and spewing magma has opened on Hawaii's Kilauea volcano, piling lava as high as a four-story building, as the area torn by the volcano's eruption spread. The agency released numerous images on Monday that showed the movement of the lava as it seeps into new areas.

She said hotter, fresher and gassier magma can result in more voluminous lava flows.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported "no significant lava flow" from a new fissure Saturday morning, but said that "conditions could change quickly".

"Earthquake activity in the summit remains elevated with several felt events at Hawaii Volcano Observatory (HVO) today".

The crack in pasture land on Kilauea's east flank was the 16th recorded since the volcano, one of the world's most active, erupted eight days ago.

As a result, rockfalls from the enclosing crater walls have produced small ash clouds mixed with condensed water vapour throughout the day.

Hawaii Civil Defense officials says boulders as big as refrigerators could be tossed a half mile, and ash plumes could soar as high as 20,000, spread over a 12-mile area.

After the Kilauea volcano erupted, the lava burned 37 structures including 27 homes, and forced 1,700 evacuations.

President Donald Trump has declared the ongoing Kilauea volcanic eruption on Hawaii's Big Island a major disaster.

Authorities also ordered workers to remove flammable pentane from a geothermal plant that is near communities that saw lava oozed from cracks in the ground.

The Hawaii National Guard is prepared, with only 90-minutes notice, to rescue some 2,000 people by ground convoy in troop-carrying vehicles and, if necessary, in Blackhawk or Chinook helicopters.

In Pahoa, the nearest village to Kilauea, some schools remained closed after the area was hit by a 6.9 magnitude quake on Friday, the biggest since 1975.

The declaration means that federal funds will be made available to state and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, to assist with emergency work and repairs.
