Margot Kidder, Lois Lane in the 'Superman' franchise, dies

Kidder played Lois Lane is four Superman movies opposite the late Christopher Reeve, who died in 2004. During the first Gulf War, she had some harsh words for the military actions in Kuwait. Kidder portrayed Lois Lane and McClure played Jimmy Olsen in the film which also starred Christopher Reeve as Superman.

As Lois, Kidder was feisty and determined - a superhero in her own way. Following a highly publicized breakdown in 1996, she revealed to People magazine she had been diagnosed with manic depression eight years prior but refused to take the recommended prescription of lithium.

"We didn't have to create a different reality". Kidder's manager Camilla Fluxman Pines confirmed Monday that the star passed away peacefully in her sleep. She then appeared in other movies such as Black Christmas and Heartaches.

Later in her career, she voiced the role of Gaia (Mother Earth) on the popular cartoon Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

Margaret Ruth Kidder was born in Canada and honed her acting skills on TV shows such as McQueen, Nichols, Banacek and Mod Squad before becoming a movie star. "She is my #LoisLane, just as #ChristopherReeve is my Superman". In 2015 she won an Emmy award for Outstanding Performer in Children's Programming for her performance on an episode of R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour.

After Kidder recovered from that incident, she became an advocate for mental health awareness. After three years together, the actress divorced Thomas in 1976 and got married to "The Sopranos" actor John Heard in 1979, which lasted only six days. She went on to appear in three sequels over the next nine years. As of 2009, she had served as the Montana State Coordinator for Progressive Democrats of America. She was arrested and removed from the White House in 2011 during a protest against the construction of an oil pipeline from Alberta to Texas.

Richard Donner, who was Kidder's director and producer on Superman, said in a statement, "Margot's passing is a very painful loss".
