John McCain releases a surprising statement about Trump's Central Intelligence Agency nominee

Though Ms. Feinstein has gone soft on these activities, she was a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and, as such, was regularly briefed by the CIA on its operations. Joe Manchin- a Democrat from Trump-friendly West Virginia - faces a tough race for re-election this November, and appears poised to side with the president over his party on Haspel.

Haspel, acting CIA director who will become its first female chief if confirmed, faced an intelligence committee at the Senate where the Republicans have a 51-49 majority.

Senator John McCain, who is recovering from brain cancer, spoke out against Haspel and warned his colleagues not to vote for her.

Wednesday morning, lawmakers asked Haspel if she would allow the agency to waterboard suspects again if the president ordered it. "I believe the Senate should exercise its duty of advice and consent and reject this nomination". "Having served in that tumultuous time, I can offer you my personal commitment, clearly and without reservation, that under my leadership, C.I.A. will not re-start such a detention and interrogation program".

In 2002, Haspel oversaw a secret agency prison in Thailand, where the New York Times reported that an al-Qaeda suspect, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, was waterboarded three times.

In her answers to more than 100 questions submitted by committee members, Haspel said: "I realize that there are strong disagreements on the effectiveness of the CIA's detention and interrogation program". The Senate Intelligence Committee is expected to vote on Haspel some time next week, and then her nomination will be put before the full chamber. During the Bush administration, McCain pushed for the White House to ban cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment for those in USA custody.

The Center for Constitutional Rights and retired general and flag officers of the USA military also wrote to express their concern about Haspel's nomination.

Haspel said she doesn't believe Trump would ask her to resume waterboarding.

"At the hearing, I questioned Ms. Haspel regarding the enhanced interrogation program that was started after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks", Collins said in a statement.

"I know that those who used enhanced interrogation methods and those who approved them wanted to protect Americans from harm". But support is not certain, which means she would need at least one Democratic vote to be confirmed by the Senate. She has spent more than 30 years working undercover, acquiring secret information from dead drops and at meetings in dusty back alleys of third-world capitals. Rand Paul saying he'll oppose Haspel and Sen.

However, Haspel declined to criticize the agency for its past techniques, like waterboarding, which critics say amounted to torture. She said she had a "great reputation" with the president and his inner circle, adding that "the president does turn to me for my view on certain countries and certain experiences". A few years later, concerns were raised about her role in the destruction of multiple videotapes depicting torture.
